Located in the historic centre this is a superb gallery that includes extraordinary collections of Egyptian, Greek, Roman antiquities, stunning art collection as well as temporary exhibitions. Impressive scale and somewhat overwhelming at times in terms of grandeur and splendour. It seemed to have one of the most popular coffee rooms in Vienna. Although I could not get a seat... More

The cafe is good for a snack or lunch. Rubens maybe 20 plus, Vermeer 'Allegory of Art' is worth the trip alone

Superb collection of art and artefacts through the ages housed in an elegant 1890s building. Allow at least 3 hours to see everything.

We visited the museum and spent a couple of hours there. Very interesting even without the recorded information there was enough information displayed around the museum. The cafe was well worth a visit and lovely clean facilities.

What can you say about an art museum where Gustav Klimt did some of the interior decorating. Seriously, the spectacular main stairway of the museum has nearly a dozen murals painted by him. The building itself is the most spectacular museum I've ever been in. Two rooms of Raphael, a room full of Titian, some key works by Durer and... More

The Kunsthistorisches museum is exactly opposite the Natural history museum and adjoining the Hofburg Palace. The building overlooks Heroes square and is always bustling with activity. We didnot visit the museum since we were short of time but the building is worth admiring for a long long time.

Don't dare leave Vienna without visiting this wonderful museum. And going mid-week, when it's practically deserted, means you feel as though you're having a private view. Truly stunning.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
