Very wide range of performances, classics, modern, comedies, thrillers - always with very good actors and actresses. The theatre itself has plenty of tradition, is comfortable and well maintained. Cute little restaurant for intermission snacks and drinks. An evening at the English Theatre is an enjoyable evening indeed.

This English language theater is a very important component of Vienna's great range of cultural offerings. Curiously, the last time we attended, many people in the audience could be heard speaking German, which attests to the fact that this isn't simply a tourist gimmick or an expat hangout -- to the contrary, it's a serious element of Vienna's contemporary culture... This beautifully preserved Theatre already creates an relaxing atmosphere and ambience before the play even starts, and then the performance and production of the actors in this intimate setting pull you in to their experience and story. The staff were also very friendly and helpful in the booking of tickets. The generally observed dress code was formal, rightly so, although... More

We went to see Sleuth at this theatre and the production and acting were excellent - we were not disappointed by the play and cast at all. It's supposedly compulsory that ypu put coats/jackets in the cloakroom (70c per item) but the rule is not applied to everyone. It's a bit of a scrample at the end as everyone wants... More

A return to a favourite venue, this little theatre was showing 12th Night, where confusion reigns. Great fun, good acting, music and singing. And all ended well with the various couples united. You need to book and be prepared for a crush at the cloakroom and bar.

Wow- a theatre in Vienna producing plays in English. It's a lovely place too with an intimate feel to it. The staff are incredibly friendly and the prices are reasonable for a theatre experience in Vienna. We saw a touring production of Woody Sez, which is a quality show about the life and music of Woody Guthrie. I would recommend... More

I came to the theatre with my Vienna friend who has season tickets. It is a lovely venue, albeit a little run down and could use some tlc. The play we saw was Run for Your Wife, one I had seen in London in l989 with Ray Cooney, the playwright, staring in it as well. I had always wanted to... More

I attended a production of a very good play - Hello / Goodbye , which I thoroughly enjoyed. Well acted & well written. I was pleasantly surprised to find this English theatre here in Vienna. A nice theatre , with a bar ; nearby are a couple of restaurants , I went to the Pizzeria Verdi very good. If you... More

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
