The Volksoper Wien, located just ten minutes outside the city centre, stages operettas "Die Fledermaus - The Bat", "Merry Widow", etc.) as well as operas ("The Magic Flute", "La Traviata", etc.), classical musicals ("My Fair Lady", "The Whizard of Oz", etc.) and ballet ("The Snow Queen", etc.). The season, which runs from September to July, consists of some 300 performances divided among some 35 different productions and revivals from previous years. Vienna and operetta - people from far and near will join the two whenever one comes up. Intriguing melodies, swirling dancers, the joy of life - all come together in the classical Viennese Operetta. Much of the music known and loved the world over from composers such as Johann Strauß, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán ... come from operettas such as "Die Fledermaus", The Merry Widow", "Countess Mariza".

The Volksoper is a well preserved building where everything works as it should. The shows are of high quality (excellent actors and musicians), tradition and innovation meet in harmony. The Volksoper's public is interestingly mixed from typical vienesse well dressed couples to adventurous tourists.Ticket prices are reasonable, most friendly for children. Enjoyed an excellent performance of "Axel am Himmelstor" in December... More

The theatre was beautiful. The seats were value for money. The facilities were excellent. The production was innovative and though occasionally the props and costumes got in the way a little bit it was wonderful.

Took my wife to see the barber of Seville although in German was still a great a experience. The lead lady blew us away with an unbelievable voice. We sat upstairs and the view was really good. May not be the state opera but the people here still dress up regardless, I didn't see a pair of jeans anywhere. Very... More

Neither my husband or I had ever been to an opera, but enjoyed the show immensely. While the show was in German, we checked the story before and at intermission to follow along. The Volksoper may not be the State Opera House, but it is certainly still top notch. One tip: make sure you have coins to check your coats.... More

In many ways the Volksoper is the poor relation to the State Opera. It is out of town, it is not as grand and you are unlikely to see top international stars. However we saw Hansel and Gretel and the Barber of Seville last week and were greatly impressed. Both the orchestra and singers were on excellent form and the... More

Volksoper is an intimate venue to see a ballet compared to the state Opera House which is majestic and grand. We saw the ballet performance of carmina burana/ afternoon with a fawn / bolero. It was magnificent. I'm a sucker for ballet though so I'm biased. This troup was gorgeous and talented. The ballerinas in particular were special. Most were... More

we went to the Volksoper to watch an Opera. The whole thing was in German (no subtitles!) but it was still a great experience because of the nice venue and the classical music within the show.

I went to the Volksoper to see Carmina Burana. It was the most amazing performance I have ever seen. There was an orchestra of some 80 members, a ballet company of over 20,a chorus of some 80, and a children's choir of 20. It was an incredible evening. I have see this performed in Boston and in Bolivia and in... More

We have booked easily tickets online for Hansel und Gretel. Even though we weren't on time since we visited Vienna for tourism and lost our way, the personnel was so kind, friendly and professional that led us to our seats as quickly as possible in order not to miss a thing. The orchestra was amazing and the actors astonishing!A unique experience,I... More

The opera house has generally good seating with a very good orchestra. It' not a gorgeous opera but it is the people's opera house. Seating is generally reasonably affordable. I watched The Marriage of Figaro here. What a complicated plot with multiple sub-plots! The opera vocals and the music was fantastic, though. There are subtitles in German for the audience... More
