About
The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

Neighbourhood: Landstraße
Landstraße, a diverse and historic neighborhood in Vienna, is a delightful mix of old and new. Its most iconic landmark, the Belvedere Palace, is a baroque masterpiece that houses an exceptional collection of Austrian art. Among the culinary delights of Landstraße is the Rochusmarkt, an open-air market offering a plethora of fresh produce, unique food stalls and local specialties. The neighborhood is easily accessible by the U3 and U4 subway lines, making it a convenient base for exploring the rest of Vienna. It is a wonderful view. There are two shrines, one is the upper shrine and the other is the lower shrine, which is easily accessible from the city centre by tram 71. You need timed tickets inside the Uemiya, so I think it would be better to buy tickets online in advance from the official website. It is best to observe from the boarding house about 30 minutes early at the designated time. It takes about 10 minutes to walk between the upper and lower shrines, but the view is great. You can enjoy a loose view of the city from the upper shrine. The sun is strong, so it is better to avoid midsummer.
The interior of the Upper Palace is home to several famous paintings by Klimt and Schiele as a museum, and is a must-see when you come to Vienna.

The Belvedere is a must if you are in Vienna. It is quite downtown, accessible by tram. It was my third time here and I can only recommend going there in good weather, possibly in April/May or September, as it bloomed and not too hot. I went back with my friend last Saturday for the night of the museums, because the ticket allowed entry. There are many paintings and different works on display, the rooms are sumptuous, the imperial stairs. Recommendation to go there with a Guide or to rent it, as you would understand little on your own. Personally, you recommend seeing only the Oberes Belvedere. Sometimes there are also temporary exhibitions, Recommendation to visit the site.

Spectacular museum, is an essential visit. We went through it for two and a half hours and time flew by. In addition to Klimt's collection, you find paintings that are true wonders. We went with the tickets online, but it is not necessary, you can buy them there and so you have freedom to choose which day you prefer to enter, since you do not find those huge queues as in the Prado museum. Also, take all the photos you want, there are only a couple of pictures that can not be taken snapshots.

The museum was beautiful.
Speaking of tickets, it can be said that for children under 19 the ticket is free, for students the ticket is reduced and for adults the fare is quite high.
the museum is very clean the bathrooms just as though smelling bad.
There was a lift service that is not obvious in all museums in Vienna even if the staff was not very nice.
There is the possibility to leave the vests and bags in the clothes hangers paid for by the museum or for free, inserting a euro or two coin that will then be taken back inside lockers.
the museum is really large and offers a rich vastness of works that are placed under correct lighting that is not obvious in all museums in Vienna.

Beautiful palace, wonderful park.
The best collection of paintings I've seen in Vienna in the Upper Belvedere, ancient paintings, Finnish painting and an artist from Ghana in the Lower Belvedere.
Finally I met Klimt and there's a lot of him, not just the Golden Women.
A visit is mandatory.

Although there wasn't enough time for me to enter the building when I visited the place last July, the Belvedere Palace is such a beautiful, historic building in Vienna and has beautiful gardens & a pond outside the palace. There is additionally a museum inside the building which is also worth a see if you have time in hand (if I ever visit Vienna again in future, I might try to see the interior of the palace & museum) and both the palace & gardens looked relatively clean & well maintained. Another thing I really liked was that its easily accessible by public transport, being directly beside the buses & trams in the main road which provides good links to Central Vienna and other parts of the city.

The building facade is under renovation but the museum is open. Timed entry was a little surprise. When I visited it 15 years ago you could just walk in at any time. Of course, huge pilgrimage to the Klimt's Kiss although it's the largest collection of Klimt which has his other wonderful paintings including portraits and landscapes. BTW the great Portrait of Sonja Knips is not on display, it's at the temporary exhibition in Wien Museum Karlsplatz. Also a few canvases by Egon Schiele and some impressionist paintings.

Outstanding art collection. The Klimts are superb and there are others apart from The Kiss. Well worth going around all the galleries if you visit. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Vienna. In spring and summer the gardens would be beautiful but we had the compensation of the Christmas market with the illuminated facade of the Palace as a backdrop. It does get busy from time to time but it is easy to move to another area until space opens up in the most popular rooms. Probably better to book a time slot to avoid queueing on entry.

My visit to Belvedere Palace was a memorable experience, highlighted by its remarkable art collection and stunning Baroque design. The Upper Palace houses masterpieces, including Klimt’s The Kiss, while the Lower Palace showcases smaller but equally intriguing exhibits.

The gardens offer breathtaking views of Vienna and are ideal for photo enthusiasts, though they seemed a bit less vibrant than expected. The palace interiors are captivating, though signage could be improved for smoother navigation. I also noticed that dining options on-site could be expanded to cater better to visitors.

Despite these minor issues, the palace delivers a rewarding experience. I recommend it to anyone visiting Vienna, especially if you enjoy art, history, or a peaceful garden escape.

After St. Stephen's Cathedral, Belvedere Palace is Vienna's most important and famous Attraction. It was built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the most successful commander in Austrian history.
Lucas von Hildebrandt built the Lower Belvedere in 1714-1716. The Luxury Upper Belvedere, where the bulk of the art collection is located, was built in 1721-1723.
Emperor Joseph II placed the Imperial Art Gallery in the Upper Belvedere once. Heir to the throne
Franz-Ferdinand lived there from 1894 until his death (he was killed in 1914).
In 1955, an agreement was signed in Marble Hall to end the post-war occupation of Austria by the Allied forces.
The Belvedere Galleries were restructured in 2007. The main entrance is now in the Lower Belvedere, where Prince Eugene's chambers, including the Golden Saloon, are located. Neighbouring Orange was equipped with a permanent exhibition of medieval art. The most significant medieval works and baerok paintings are presented in the Upper Belvedere. However, the most interesting for tourists is the brilliant collection of masterpieces by Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele and other masters of the late 19th and early 20th century. The nearby Schweizergarten houses Fritz Wotruba’s collection of art from the second half of the 20th century.
