Located in the Innere Stadt, first district of Vienna, the Freyung houses a number of interesting sights, such as a monastery called Schottenkloster and a number of City Palaces, known as Palais (Palais Harrach, Palais Hardegg, Palais Kinsky, Palais Ferstel,...). During Sommer months there is a market every weekend where local farmers sell their organic products. A wonderful public rectangular... More

Freyung is a medieval square in Vienna that is shaped like a triangle. Haha. A monastery, the Schottenkloster, was built here by monks from Ireland and Scotland and gave the square its historical significance. The square is surround by many examples of fine baroque architecture due to the proximity to Hofburg. Many aristocrats build their residences here, which later on... More

One of the smaller and quieter of Vienna's Christmas markets situated in an old neighbourhood and surrounded by grand buildings and the Schottenkirche. More traditional than some of the bigger markets and selling lots of homemade handicraft goods that weren't seen elsewhere but also with a Vienna souvenir stand. Just a few steps further on was the Am Hof Christmas... More

After visiting some Xmas markets in Vienna I am convinced it is the most traditional beside the one at the Stephansdome. It is located in the downtown but the area feels pretty quiet and lovely. It is not far from the Rathaus and its Christmas market but is entirely different. All the vendors at the Xmas market have original, handmade... More

The Freying area is a lovely, quiet little area in the first district. It is not far from the Rathaus but feels entirely different. It is wonderfully quiet and friendly at the same time. All the vendors at the Xmas market have original, handmade wares and food. We found beautiful candles, jewelry, baskets (you can watch them being made) and... More

Freyung is an old neighborhood in central Vienna with palatial homes and the Schottenkirche (Scottish church) which dates back to the mid-12th century. The area is a farmers’ market that becomes the “Altwiener Christkindlmarkt” during the pre-Christmas Advent season. It is a short walk from the big Christmas market at Rathaus (city hall) along the Ringstrasse to Schottengasse to Freyung... More

Really small and cute Xmas market here which sells amazing Glu Wien. Lots for the kids to look at, needs more toilets though. Less crowded than other Xmas markets.

If you love art and architecture stop by and admire it. It is quieter and its neighbour Michaelerplatz.

Freyung is the site of the Easter (and Christmas) market. It was very crowded the Saturday before Palm Sunday when we visited. You can find just about anything here, or down the street at the Am Hof square.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
