Neighbourhood: Leopoldstadt
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.

- Lyall DEdinburgh, United Kingdom487 contributionsWell worth going on the wheel. The big wheel was fantastic, giving great views of Vienna and the Fair ground below. Unfortunately, due to us visiting in the early afternoon a number of the attractions were not open. There were some Christmas market stalls there doing a great trade in mulled wine and food.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 14, 2024
- G2903WQcarolsNorfolk, United Kingdom109 contributionsNice to doWent in the evening during December. Came out of the nearby train station into a dodgy looking area but crossed over to the funfair area. Got onto the ferris wheel pretty quickly, not too crowded and no seating so free to walk around the carriage and take photos from both sides. Good views, able to drop down a window to avoid glare/reflections from a camera. Also a small museum area showing the history of Vienna.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024
- Tunes79Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom569 contributionsFun in the SkyIt’s the one place almost everyone knows before they go to Vienna, and you can see it from miles around. Its fame does not diminish its worth and we all loved the trip up and down. Despite being at the height of summer and on a warm day, we hardly had to queue and had a carriage for our own group of eight - loads of space and far better than other similar rides where you can feel packed in like sardines. It takes about 15-20 minutes for a full go round and you get good views over the rest of the city. There is no commentary and no boards explaining what you can see, but it doesn’t take away from the experience in the slightest. The windows also open so you can take better pictures!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 24, 2024

🇬🇧A very nice view on the whole Vienna, but what shocked us, was the behavior of one of the workers, before entering the wheel. It is true that we have not noticed the line on the ground where it is written to stand behind it, but I think that she could said it politely and there was no need to shout and scream at us. I think that for the price of the entrance fee, which is not the cheapest, such an approach is not in place.

This was on my list of things to see and do when in Vienna, it is very easy to get to vi's the U1 metro line but however as it was a nice day we walked from St Stephens Cathedral which too us around 30mins.
Obviously the wheel itself has a lof ot history, is very old and beautiful, well maintained etc, inside the recording area is a display of the wheel and park through the years which is pretty interesting.
It cost 13.50€ per person and at around 3pm on a Friday there was no queue.
The only bad thing I'd say it that it's all over and done with very quickly!!
Worth seeing but not sure if it's worth the few minute ride.

This is a leisurely ride, that allows superb views of the city from an old fashioned, but large Ferris wheel.
We did not buy tickets in advance, as we weren’t sure what the queues would be and couldn’t face a long wait. We arrived at about 17:00 on a Thursday in August and there was no queue for tickets and a 5 minute wait for the wheel.
There were about 10 people in each compartment, although some were used for private dining which looked lovely!

After a day of visiting attractions in the center of Vienna, we finally visited the Ferris Wheel. Buying a ticket was an unpleasant experience. The seller was grumpy and curt while we were the only ones in the "line" at the time. Before you step onto the Ferris wheel itself, you walk through a room with old "wagons" with miniature representations of different periods of Vienna. The ride on the wheel itself was very quiet and smooth. You can just walk around the booths or sit on the benches in the middle. We went at the beginning of the evening so that you could see the lights of the Prater around and the city of Vienna beautifully. Even with the Wien Card discount card, it is still 13 euros per person, so quite pricey.

First visit for over 30 years and it had lost none of its charm. In fact I would say no visit to Vienna is complete without a spin on the big wheel. This place like the rest of the capital is easy reached by the excellent public transport system.
At €13 this is not a cheap thing to do but this is over 100 years old and the oldest ferris wheel in the world.
As you await your turn there is a small museum which plots the history of the wheel.
Like my previous visit we arrived as the sun was setting which made a perfect backdrop for our visit.

We had our dinner in the Ferris wheel in November. When I booked it, I had to swallow hard, but it turned out that the evening was worth every cent.
You are picked up by the staff and taken directly to a separate entrance to the private gondola. Here, the aperitif and accompanying wine (0.375l red wine, 0.375l white wine, mineral water and water) are already waiting for you. The room is heated, there is candlelight and nice music.
You go around a total of 5 times, after each round you are served another course (greeting from the kitchen, starter, main course, dessert and coffee) - after the main course you go around 2 times.
We were really impressed by the ambience, the view, the food and the service and felt very comfortable.
You choose the menu directly when you book - there were 4 to choose from.
All food and drinks are included.
I can really recommend this package for a romantic evening for two (or for several people). It is something completely different and truly extraordinary.

This is the number one "activity" in Prater.
We made arrangements in order to have the ride with the famous Ferris wheel early evening in order to see Vienna from above at night.
Nice was also to see the small museum with miniatures showing Vienna the old times and the shop buying your photo prior entering the wheel.

The oldest giant ferris wheel in the world in Vienna deserves its fame completely, and is simply a must-see, providing beautiful views (and photos, wink wink) in a charming, classy ride that gently (yes, gently - it's not a roller-coaster) takes you high up and down as you enjoy the incredible wheel mechanism and the ever better sights of Vienna.
The overall vibe is very charming and romantic, and we enjoyed ourselves every minute, to the extent that we immediately booked another ride and went again!
You can also book a drink or dinner in one of the cabins, in which case I assume you stay for the duration as the wheel makes multiple rotations, as opposed to a single ride.
It's funny to note that both London and Paris had similar wheels at some point, but dismantled them because they "weren't profitable" and thus missed out on having an incredible attraction like this. A big LOL indeed!
10/10, would visit again.
p.s. Prater in general as a park and amusement park is simply awesome, and is worth your time

My twin brother Stephen and I were in Vienna in the run up to the Christmas period and we visited Prater ,the famous Viennese amusement park to enjoy the famous Prater Christmas Market and the centrepiece of this Christmas market is Wiener Riesenrad, this is the beautiful big wheel.
Wiener Riesenrad ( Vienna Giant Wheel ) is just stunning to view ,designed by British engineers Harry Hitchins and Hubert Cecil Booth and constructed by British engineer Lieutenant Walter Bassett Bassett in 1897 ,it was built to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of Franz Josef I and was one of the first Ferris wheels ever constructed .
This big wheel looked amazing when we visited and very popular indeed ,loved it ,great views and it was great taking in the great views of the Christmas market afforded for the big wheel ,if you're planning on visiting Vienna then a trip to Prater and the Wiener Riesenrad is highly recommended.

Very disappointing. Having paid our monies and informed that we would have a 10-15 min ride was very disappointed to have one spin on the wheel. It didn't even pause at the top for the view. We were the only people on and I'm surprised they didn't let us have another turn. The staff were quite surly. If you want a view of the city go up the tower which had a revolving restaurant. Far better experience.

Hi, do you know if the Ferris wheel has any weight limitation? I've searched on the web but I could not find any.
Written January 9, 2024
If I want to have breakfast, do I need to make a reservation? If so, how? The website is in german and it is totally unclear to me how to book breakfast.
Written March 22, 2023
It is a little bit tricky if you don’t speak German, but they have a different website for the dining options on the wheel.
Unfortunately trip advisor don’t allow website links in these question answers, but if you search Vienna Riesenrad gourmet Waggons you should find it.
You will be looking to book a voucher (Gutschein) for the correct number of people, and you have mentioned breakfast (Frühstück).
But if you are unsure contact them at +43 17295430-19, I am yet to meet the German / Austrian that can’t speak English!

yes providing you are not about to drop there are place to sit and plenty of standing room as they dont overload the cars and it takes about 12 minutes the views are amazing

Hi All,
Is a ride on the Riesenrad feris wheel in the night worth it? Is the view as spectacular as during the day?
Written September 8, 2017
It's sufficiently close to the centre of town that the lights of Vienna AND the lights on the Danube will be visible... but whatever time of day, please make sure you DO take a ride - it's a magical memory!!
