Interesting Building, Plenty to See

If you're in Central Vienna, you can't go wrong by visiting the Museum District. Plenty of exhibits, concerts, and attractions to keep you occupied between meals and shop[ing.

Visited today with my daughters (aged 12 and 8 years). Was prepared to pay the 11 Euros admission fee (children are free) but was told that admission today was free - win, win. Staff very unfriendly and non helpful, but hey we were here for the art, not the staff. Building is impressive, vey large and well laid out. Enough... More

I'm not a huge fan of modern art but this was just too disappointing. I have encountered modern art that spoke to me and was trying to convey a message or give me something to talk about. MUMOK only made me think about the time I wasted here and not in parks, churches or cafes, not to mention all the... More

Lots of truly impressive and unconventional exhibitions. Make sure you have enough time cause the museum is huge. If you love contemporary art, you are gonna have a great time here.

The building itself is spectacular, as is most of the Museum Quarter. They take themselves pretty seriously. Backpacks left in locker, staff watching in every room so that you don't take photos (except lower 2 levels). The current exhibition, 2.0, contains a few gems, but most of its content could be described by a 4 letter word rhyming with pit.... More

I'm a fan of "modern art"...I think that is anything after 1950, but don't quote me on that. Unfortunately the rotating exhibit is "Painting 2.0", which featured lots and lots of paintings that were just terrible or bland. Well, not all of them, but a majority of them. But there was still some interesting pieces in the permanent collection. Its... More

I've been to the Ludwig museums in Cologne (brilliant) and Budapest (very good) and so had high hopes for this one. They were dashed pretty quickly. There are four or five floors of pretty dull stuff (the odd Warhol, other known artists offer some interest). The ad for the present exhibition of inter-war artists is a bit of a come-on... More

Been to a number of modern art and installation museums. This one is ok. Couple of Warhols and other well know pieces but does not compare with major museums. Not much other choice in beautiful Vienna.

We decided at last moment on going to this museum, since we visited the Leopold. It was definitively worth a visit especially because of the building and the arrangement of the exposition. I'm not sure about the quality of the collection, probably less then the bigger ones. But overall it was quite nice and enjoyed the visit. I will remember... More

Very impressive building housing a good collection of modern art. Plenty to see and some interesting exhibitions when we visited. Probably not as good as The Leopold or indeed the Albertina, though worth a look.

Neighbourhood Profile
Neubau
Vienna’s art district, Neubau buzzes with galleries, arts and crafts, trendy restaurants, avant-garde shops, and cafés. Neubau’s Spittelberg quarter with cobblestoned Spittelberggasse and Gutenberggasse make for a perfect stroll alongside Biedermeier houses and art shops. Don’t miss the historic courtyard at Amerlinghaus with its typical Pawlatschen galleries, a perfect hangout on a warm summer evening. Museumsquartier is Neubau’s undisputed highlight: the former Imperial stables house various top museums of 19th to 21st century art. If you love interiors, head for the Imperial Furniture museum (Hofmobiliendepot), one of the world’s largest furniture collections. Find your favorites among a dazzling array of Baroque, Biedermeier, Art Nouveau and Modernist chairs, sofas, cupboards, coat hangers, foot stools and wash basins. No weekend visit would be complete without stopping by a local café on a weekend morning for brunch.
