Neighbourhood: Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.

This concert repertoire was light classical music for tourists. People photographed and videotaped throughout the concert which was very annoying and made it impossible to focus on music. Solo artists were second-class opera singers (or sound output was poor which did not get singers sounding very good). The orchestra was playing beautifully and it was not too bad. The venue was beautiful in Imperial Palace (Hofburg)
If you want to experience a high level of musical enjoyment Vienna, I recommend to choose something else instead of this.

As a tourist, I want to learn the classic music culture in Vienna. There is no better place than listening Strauss and Mozart in the beautiful Hofburg Palace at night. I was expected an uptight Vienna Hofburg Orchestra, but the energetic performance and light humor eased me. The concert was the first step to introduce Vienna to my visit.

Perhaps because we had already experienced superior programs within the fortnight, this was disappointing. With no reflection on the players, this event struck me as "Greatest Hits for the Barely Familiar or ADD-afflicted." No shortage of music, however unnecessarily tricked up with vocals and dance, IMHO adding nothing to the performance. Probably better for most to experience this show rather than nothing, but . . . . Also, we did not receive the seating we paid for, but don't think that would have improved my impression.

No offense meant to the performers, some were quite talented but overall the show was pretty terrible. While the venue was nice, I was expecting a more rehearsed, cohesive orchestra even if not the best of the best. It was clear this group included retired and part-time musicians who, if for example were playing in a church mass, would be considered good but not when you are paying about $60 per ticket.
The production mixed orchestra with some solo and duet singers, as well as tried to mix in some comedy as part of the musical production. I believe the throngs of retirees on tours may have enjoyed it, but for a young-30s couple this was not a good choice and I felt somewhat robbed. Also, very strange that people were standing, using flash photography, or holding their i-Pads up to record for minutes at a time and no usher or similar ever asked them to stop. Nothing like having the bright incandesent iPad screen shining back at you as someone in front records the below average performance.
Finally - there was no snack bar (or even better a real bar) so if you come across a free ticket and want to go, I suggest bringing a water bottle.

This was my big disappointment in my trip....!!! The day before to this concert, we went to see Aida in the Vienna State Opera.... I went to listen Mozart and Strauss, and we ended in a parody. It is ok if you know that was going to be like that. But, since it was in the Palace, my husband and I gave more credit to any other performance. Big mistake. Maybe it is worth for all the middle age tours that come but we are in our 40s and we had much better options that this concert.

The hall was rather crowded. The music wasn't very inspiring. Further, many people were taking pictures and talking during the performance which was rather bothersome. The venue was rather grand though.

Located in a different room to one featured in the picture above. Approx 20 piece ensemble that played very well. Accompanied by singers and dancers all of which we could not see. Sitting in the second last row it was impossible to see the stage. This could be semi fixed by using staggered seating where you can see between the two people in front of you. For the $45 euros a ticket, I definitely expected to be able to see the stage and receive a program of the music to be played (cost $6 euro).

Dear Carla W,
thank you for your review!
We are glad that you enjoyed the music.
The classical concerts in Vienna are visited by many tourists, both in groups and individually. We do our best to provide the best possible experience for everyone, but unfortunately this is not always easy. Of course, a tour group would like to sit together. Likewise a family with 2 children. Our evening staff tried on the basis of the booking list every evening to create a plan to offer each guest a good place in the booked category.
We are very sorry that you were not satisfied with your seat. We will do our best to create more transparency here and accordingly upload the sittings and seating plans of our concert halls. We understand your disappointment that there were no introductions and/or free program to know which pieces were played. To explain: Traditionally, programs are not handed out as printed papers, neither are the pieces announced. You will not find paper printouts in the State Opera, or at the Vienna Philharmonics. A lot of newly found orchestras and ensembles break with this tradition. We are currently working on a compromise, so that you will be able to see/download the program each day on our website. This would solve that problem, not break with the tradition of a typical classical concert and will also be more ecological responsible than printing hundreds of booklets every evening. This will be possible in 2020.
Best regards,

I was approached by Hansome Gentlemen in period costume hoping to sell me tickets to one of the Hofburg Orchestra Evenings. I was a little sceptical, and having checked that they had a license, I took the plunge. I found later that the tickets I was sold were exactly the same ones available at the ticket office. This Building is sublime, the acoustics incredible, and the atmosphere wonderful. As a taster for Classical and Opera Novices, it was perfect. I would definitely recommend this experience, well worth every Euro.

I will make it clear that the decision to listen to the orchestra was made last minute. Our river cruise company (Viking) most likely added it as an included excursion as a "gift" to make up for inconveniences caused by having to change ships due to low river water levels. That said, we were totally enchanted by the fine performance of the orchestra. The Mozart, Strauss and other pieces were played energetically with a bit of humor interspaced between performances. It also gave us the opportunity to see the palace area all lit up in the evening. This was a great way to end a wonderful day in Vienna.

My mom and I bought category A tickets for this concert. The lady at the tourist office told us the doors opened at 20:00, so we were planning to get there around 19:45. By chance, we were in the area early and decided to do a reconnaissance around 18:45. We're really grateful we did as the doors open at 19:00 (and the seating is first come, first served). The seating is on 3 levels - the centre area is on the ground, then a slightly raised platform on either side, and then a further raised platform on either side. We were on the highest platform on the left side in the first row, which really added to our enjoyment. The music was great - all Strauss and Mozart and beautifully played - and it was great to be able to see the faces of the musicians and conductor up close. There's some humor thrown into the performance, which adds to the fun. There were also 4 singers, 2 of whom were excellent and 2 of whom were very good. I do recommend going and I recommend getting there early to get a good seat.

Dear piegolo,
thank you very much for your request. Which seats are the best depends on the preference of the guests. Since the concert halls where we perform are quite big, category A is what I would recommend. Please do not forget that you have free seating within the categories - except from some groups who need to sit together. Therefore, the principle "first come first serve" rules.
But to get detailed information for the choice of your seat you can read the article "classical concert in Vienna - 7 helpful tips" on the viennatickets-blog. It is very helpful!
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us
