This monument stands in tribute to the over 17 thousand Soviet soldiers who died in the liberation of Vienna in the latter stages of the Second World War.
The design of the monument is fairly typical of Soviet War memorials, post World War Two. The monument consists of a central column topped with a sculpture of a Soviet soldier with a semi-circular colonnade behind the column. The Soviet soldier is depicted also in fairly typical fashion, armed with a machine gun, holding a Soviet flag. Distinctive feature is the golden helmet and a round golden shield.
The monument stands in a prominent location near Palais Schwarzenberg. A little way from the main tourist district, but worth the effort if you have time

The Soviet War Memorial is an immense structure in central Vienna at Schwarzenbergplatz, and is officially known as Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee. It is a semi-circular construction made of white marble with a twelve metre figure of a Red Army soldier as a centrepiece. It was opened in 1945 and was built to commemorate the 17,000 Soviet soldiers who were killed in action at the time of the Vienna Offensive in WW2. The whole structure is truly striking however due to an obscenely large construction crane behind the memorial absolutely spoils any attempt of a decent photograph. It is a memorial that is worth a visit whilst in Vienna.

Whilst travelling around Vienna you will always come across unexpected beautiful or significant landmarks. Here we have an inspiring monument to the Russian soldiers who fought to protect Vienna. Worth a visit for remembrance or just to view this interesting and yet powerful monument.

There is a wall behind this monument which provides a backdrop. The wall is painted yellow along the bottom and blue across the top, the colours of Ukraine. If there is a monument to struggle and sacrifice this is it.
In front of it is a memorial.

In fact there is nothing to see here - a fountain with a several columns - it was amazing to hear only Russians there... Maybe it is very important for the Russian history place, but in fact there is noting to see

We've been here 4 times, at each our visit to Vienna. It is beautifully and neatly kept. Always clean and tidy to really commemorate those Soviets who died to make the Europeans free from fashism. Unlike other places in Europe, especially Eastern Europe, Austria n's remember the war victims. They do not destroy monuments and do not fight with the dead.
Thank you, people of Vienna and Austria.

Very impressive column with a soviet soldier on top. It commemorates the 17 thousand soviet soldiers that fell during the liberation of vienna in 1945. It is central to the schwarzenberg square which is a rather big semi round about with lots of cars moving around.

On a sunny day a golden Soviet soldier looks down on us ordinary people. The overall monument is very impressive, reminding us of the many Soviet soldiers giving their lives to fight Nazi Germany. The fountain in front of the Soviet War Memorial is actually not part of it. This fountain was build a lot earlier to celebrate the first direct water Pipeline from the Alps to Vienna - the so called 1st Hochquellenwasserleitung. In the evening coloured lights flood the fountain's water with different colours. Very nice!
