The Polar Bear Society is located on the coastal steamer pier, together with Hammerfest’s Tourist Information. Join the world famous and exclusive society, and receive the Polar Bear Pin as proof that you visited the World’s Northernmost Town – Hammerfest! Our museum showcases our proud traditions with fishing and hunting in arctic conditions. There is also a gift shop.

You can only become a member in the Polar Bear Society when you visit Hammerfest in person. A membership costs NOK 200,00 as a one time fee. The money supports the exhibition and pays the components of the membership: the Polar Bear pin in silver and enamel, a sticker with our logo on, a brochure with our statutes and some information, a diploma with your name on signed by the mayor of Hammerfest, a membership card with your own membership number.

It was great, but we arrived after 12.30 and they close at 1pm on a Saturday.... in fact we almost got locked in! Enjoyed reading about the exhibits, but needed more time... well worth a visit and it is free, much better than many paying Scandinavian museums...

Pleasant hour spent in this small unique museum and tourist information centre. Staff were so helpful and friendly. In praise of stock fish and an opportunity to join 240,000 others worldwide by becoming a member of the Polar Bear Society for 200 NOK .... very definitely worthwhile!

Stuffed polar bear and a walrus head aside, plenty of facts and exhibits. Free to get in, and nice shop to peruse.

The passengers from the Nordnorge, on the Hurtigruten cruise line only had a short time to go round this unique museum telling you everything about polar bearsand what sort of exploration had been involved withthese amazing creatures. It was interesting and informative and gave you a feeling of what things had been like in the past and how polar bears... More

We visited this small Intimate Museum & Shop as part of a stop on our Arctic Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage. It was possibly the only place available to visit on a Sunday in 'The Most Northerly City' in the World; helpful staff, quality souvenirs, and a simple but informative reflection on Hammerfests involvement in Arctic fishing, Polar Bear hunting and life... Went here on a hurtigruten cruise. It was great. Very informative and they can even stamp your passport with the hammerfest as it's the worlds most northern most town!

Like many others we stopped here on a Hurtigruten trip. This free to enter attraction has many things to offer including information about the history of Hammerfest and how people live, thrive and survive above the Arctic circle. It also has the added bonus of free wifi and some of the most reasonably priced souvenirs we have seen anywhere else... More

To be fair this is probably only rated so highly as there is little else in Hammerfest and as it's right next to The Hurtigruten mooring it's very easy to visit. But it's still interesting and worth a visit, not least because it's one of the few attractions we found on our Hurtigruten cruise that had free admission! Lots of... More
