This museum, located close to the royal palace in downtown Oslo, is part of the cultural museum on another island close to the viking ship museum. The ticket for the cultural museum gets you access to this history museum. This museum offers a section on...More

Interesting displays of Nordic and Viking cultures including the very cool Viking Helmet. Of particular interest was the treasury room with the walk through gold vault. A significant portion of the gold coin reserve that was hidden during the war years and now on display.

Lots on Norwegian history, its culture and sea faring past. Also rooms with Chinese exhibits and Egyptian mummies. Close to the National Gallery so you can walk from there.

... museum commitment issues. Each section of this museum is quite brief and the museum covers Viking life, to Arctic culture, an Egyptian exhibit and even goes to the Americas. So each exhibit is quite short and perfect for kids or adults that are not...More

We visited this museum as it was included on the Viking Ship museum ticket. We were in search for more Viking artifacts as my daughter loves Viking history. It was a very unusual display and not much in English. In retrospect, I would have spent...More

We visited the Historic museum because entry was included with the ticket to the Viking Ship Museum. We would have been disappointed if we had paid the full entrance charge. We found little of interest and the displays diverse and unconnected. There were Egyptian mummies,...More

I came here because of an interest in the Vikings, and was not disappointed. In the respect that one can be selective, this museum is well worth the visit. The Viking element is very interesting, as is the section on pre-Reformation Norway. A few minor...More

Beautiful and great building. But the collection is not so big. There are egyptian mummies, historical clothes, viking time objects, inuit art, medieval art... 45 minutes was enough time to spend here. The exhibition and collections are strangely displayed.

If you want to find a bit more about Viking life, then it's definitely worth coming to the Historisk Museum, which is a combined ticket with the Ship Museum. Some good displays about everyday Viking life. Other displays do change, but we also found out...More

We really enjoyed the varied collections in this museum. From the gold coins to the Viking age to the small Asian collection, there are a lot of things to see here, along with two or three changing special exhibits. It's nicely laid out in chronological...More
