Somewhere quite in the middle of Oslo. Went mainly to see Edvard Munchs grave which we found quite easily. All going well until we walked up to it on the snow and went down with a big bump. It was total thick ice underneath and all around us. They really should have some sort of a warning as unless your agile enough it's very difficult to get back on your feet. Was still worth the visit.

If you have a walk near Grűnerløkka district it is easy to find this cemetery. Small modest cemetery but famous norwegians are buried here, like Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Munch. You will find a map at the gate how to find these graves.

My husband and I visited this peaceful and well laid out cemetery underway from Damstredet to old Aker Church and Telthusbakken.
After a bit of searching we found the simple grave of Edvard Munch (the painter best known for his painting "the Scream").
Several other famous Norwegians are buried here, but other gravemonuments of unknown people were as imposing.
This cemetery makes a nice detour on a stroll in this charming and peaceful neighbourhood.

A very well kept cemetery, in the middle of Oslo. Eventhough it is in the city, it’s quiet & serene. Many famous Norwegians are resting there, & I love walking around googling their history. Henrik Ibsen, Edward Munch, Welhaven, Wergeland, Camilla Collett, Oda Krogh & Alf Prøysen to name a few. Relaxing & calm place.

Graveyards on a snowy day are wonderful places to visit for quiet contemplation. This graveyard, which opened in 1801 for the victims of famine and cholera, is the resting place of many famous Norwegians and is not far from the city centre. Munch, Ibsen, Camilla Collet, Ole Bull, Thomas Fearnley, and Bjornsonstjerne Bjornson are just some of the famous names to be found with quite an interesting variety of monuments marking their respective graves. The graveyard has a high mound in the middle making a good view point over the cemetery and the town. At the entry gate is a map showing the cemetery sections and marking the graves of the famous. Study this carefully otherwise you could be wandering around for hours looking for a particular grave!

As the most famous cemetery in the country it’s rewarding to stroll along the well kept tranquil pathways.
Opened in the early 1800s to cater for deaths from famine and epidemics it became the resting place of choice for society’s famous and elites.
Acclaimed artists are interred here. Graves of Ibsen, Munch and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson are thoughtful but not ostentatious.

I find cemeteries very peaceful places, and this one is a pleasant place to come for some contemplation. You can visit the ‘celebrity’ graves for a bit of culture, and then sit amongst the trees and shrubbery to enjoy the peace and quiet.

The cemetery is a must see in Oslo. It has some beautiful graves and natural surroundings.
Visit Munch and Ibsen and enjoy some lovely scenery (morbid I know).

We visited this cemetery because we wanted to see Edward Munch's grave which has a bust of the great man himself at the top of a tall column. This visit was not a disappointment as the whole place is like an attractive, well-kept park. There are also the graves of many other notable Norwegians including Henrik Ibsen

This may not be your first thought when visiting Oslo, but if you have a few days you should definitely include it! The cemetery is truly lovely with beautifully maintained flowers and trees. There are so many old and interesting headstones. This particular site is the resting place of Munch and Ibsen as well as several other people of note. There are benches scattered throughout and it really has a park feel. Interesting and worth walking through. Sitting and listening to the church bells is a serene and tranquil moment in this bustling city.
