About
Founded in 1993, the Astrup Fearnley Museet is one of Scandinavia´s most notable museums for contemporary art. The museum holds the extensive Astrup Fearnley Collection, which includes significant works by artists like Matthew Barney, Paul Chan, Nicole Eisenman, Ida Ekblad, Trisha Donnelly, Félix González-Torres, Rachel Harrison, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, and Cindy Sherman. The museum presents changing exhibitions that both draw on the collection and new commissions by artists from all over the world. The museum building is designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and is surrounded by Tjuvholmen sculpture park with a view over the Oslo Fjord.

- MilenaKrakow, Poland35 contributionsIn search for modern artThough being surprisingly small, the museum is intriguing with a pretty souvenir store. Worth seeing for everyone interested in art and worth walking around it to get to a small public beach. You should also consider looking for the rest of the small art galleries scattered around the museum.Thank you so much for your review! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at our museum. A great tip to visit the galleries on Tjuvholmen! It is certainly eclectic with works by RB Kitaj, Damien Hirst and David Hockney & combines paintings, sculpture and installations. The views from the museum are fantastic and add to the experience of visiting.Thank you so much for visiting us and giving us this nice review! - lyndawilson72501 contributionsModern Art HeavenStructurally breathtaking building on Oslo waterfront. Modern Art Museum over a few floors. Highlights were Damien Hirst exhibits, David Hockney paintings and the iconic Jeff Koons Michael Jackson & Bubbles sculpture. Well worth a hour of your time, then wander around the Tjuvholmen area.Dear Lynda, Thank you very much for your positive feedback! Hope you had the chance to see both the Astrup Fearnley Collection and the temporary exhibition Alpha Crucis - African Contemporary Art. Welcome back! House of rules ... & v little seating going round. Two buildings ... but space not full. Many exhibits revive the 'what is art' debate. Some interesting sculptures outside. Excellent Italian restaurant next door. Area generally interesting with up market shopping & walkways.

The buidling by Renzo Piano is beautiful and not to be missed at the end of the boulevard. During our visit the collection was closed but the exhbition in the waterside buidling was very good. Price was reduced to 80 kr which seems fair. The garden with sculptures is nice on a sunny day with views of the harbour but has no interesting works (go to Ekestein instead)

Was a fun experience there, a lot of interesting stuff in the shop as well. Saw a weekend workshop for kids there, but not sure if some of the arts there are suitable for kids.

This museum has two buildings and the layout is unique. However, you feel that the place is half empty and they could place all the exhibition items into one of the buildings, there are vast empty spaces. Not one of the top museums in Oslo and not one of the best contemporary art museums in the world.

What you think of the art content is of course very personal. It is worth a visit but the amount of art is somewhat limited. I liked Coon's 'Bubbles' for example.

Changing exhibitions and very nice surroundings, especially during the summer months. Bring your bathing suit for a quick dive into the Oslo fjord.

We paid to get in but a significant section of the museum was closed for a new installation.
The portion we saw was very disappointing and had we known the content beforehand, we would not have visited.

Dramatic architectural design with nautical theme. Collection very modern and highly unusual. Restaurant hidden away with great outdoor dining terrace.

This is a contemporary Arts museum in the centre of Oslo. (Akkers Bridge) The star of the show was Damien Hirst’s cow and calf encased in formaldehyde. I also enjoyed seeing the Jeff Koons sculpture. The exhibits are limited to lesser known artists, but they are very good. I truly enjoyed my visit.
Entrance fee is 100 NOK or free with Oslo Pass. I used my 24 hr Oslo Pass to all the museums I reviewed.
Next to the exhibition hall are sculptures/installations .

Not knowing anything about her it was interesting to begin with the temporary exhibition of works by Synnove Anker Aurdal. A pioneer of Norwegian Textile Art she took this medium from the traditional to modern forms.
A multitude of modern artists are shown in the permanent collection. Damien Hirst features prominently with his signature animals in formaldehyde and pieces from the series God Alone Knows.
Locker Sculpture by Matias Faldbakken comprises a series of lockers, of a type seen ubiquitously, crushed and bound together. Symbolises a rail against systems and institutions.
Anselm Kiefer’s The High Priestess is another striking work. It shows 196 lead books in steel bookcases, with glass and copper wire. An individual book is also displayed.
A famous creation in porcelain by Jeff Koons, namely Michael Jackson and Bubbles, proudly sits here.
Cannot leave without a mention of the building. Can be classed as a work of art in its own right. Marvellous on the seafront.
