The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire's award-winning gallery designed by David Chipperfield Architects which opened to the public in May 2011. The UK's largest purpose-built gallery in over 50 years, we celebrate the achievements of one of Britain's most significant sculptors, Barbara Hepworth, in the city in which she was born and raised.

As well as the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth's working models gifted to Wakefield through the Art Fund, the gallery also holds the collection of the former Wakefield Art Gallery. Alongside collection displays, we also present a regularly changing programme of contemporary exhibitions by world-renowned artists as well as offering award-winning family and learning activities for all ages, a cafe bar and shop - a perfect day out for all the family. Free admission all year round.

Free entry but £5.00 car park charge. A large modern concrete bunker full of so called modern art. Unfortunately this was not to our taste. We were hoping for more information and exhibits about Barbara Hepworth but there was very little.

Visited yesterday on breezy March day, paid our £5 car park fee opposite the gallery linked by a foot bridge over the canal and river Calder. Spent a couple of hours in the Hepworth particularly enjoying the layout, views from the widows and the various exhibits. Then a pleasant lunch with informative staff. Apart from Sunday's a free bus is... More

I had a free afternoon so I got the free bus to the gallery to see for myself what it was all about. Oh my word what a complete waste of time, space and real estate this place is! The strapped for cash local city council has sunk a lot of money into this gallery supposedly to attract visitors to... More

Blown away by this modern gallery today both inside and out . The building itself captures the essence of Hepworth style dramatically fitting in with it's landscape in sympathy the style of the artist. Inside it successfully mixes the Hepworth story and other temporary exhibitions as well as filling it's space well I think it's a gallery style that will... More

Imaginative and thoughtful exhibitions coupled with helpful staff and a dynamic environment. The food is pretty good too.

First time visiting The Hepworth, was very busy and totally impressed. The gallery was compact but everything was extremely interesting. The print exhibition was fabulous and gave the artists the chance to sell their works. Had a great day and even found gluten free cakes in the cafe! Parking is a pain but carried on past and found an industrial... More

Came to visit on Saturday, be aware this is a long walk from the centre of Wakefield but clearly signposted. Large modern building located on the riverside which was in full flow. Situated on two floors with gallery, shop and restaurant. There is a lift to the first floor but was out of order on our visit but we did... More

With this fascinating homage to Barbara Hepworth the Bilbao Effect reaches Wakefield. The building itself is, in a word, stunning. Rising, quite literally, out of the River Calder, the gallery blends seamlessly into the post-industrial landscape of this historic Yorkshire city. The approach to the building crosses the Calder, and it is from this vantage point that one can really... More
