About
Housed in Taunton’s historic castle, the Museum of Somerset tells the county's fascinating story from prehistoric times to the present day. Within the 12th century castle walls you’ll find contemporary gallery spaces and great family visitor facilities, all situated within the vibrant town centre. With an amazing nine themed galleries, each with its own distinctive character, there’s something for everyone to discover. Our ‘must see’ exhibits include a 200 million year old Plesiosaur fossil (a type of marine reptile); the impressive Low Ham Roman mosaic; a stunning Bronze Age Gold Torc and the shoes worn by 7ft4 Joseph Sewell. The museum also houses The Somerset Military Museum. Pre-booking required.

A very enjoyable visit. Friendly staff. Spotlessly clean. Very interesting and well presented galleries. Excellent educational place to take children of all ages. All based in a grade 1 listed Castle which is fantastic!...i will be back for a 3rd visit in the future. Big thumbs up from me 👍

I visited here on a wet Saturday afternoon with my husband and 10yr old, it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and there were lots of really interesting exhibits for us all to enjoy. Thank you

The museum of somerset in Taunton is a great place to visit. It shows us history of our local areas. It also has some cool things for young visitors to look at and try on. (Although sadly we couldn't this time due to Covid 19) The staff and team there try their best to make it a good day and are really friendly. Thanks Taunton museum for letting me come to see the stuff you have :)

Worth a look in

A great museum, which is family friendly and very good wheelchair access if required.

The staff are always friendly, helpful and willing to help. My son (9) loves visiting and especially likes the various military helmets and jackets that you can try on (handy for photos). Younger children have things to do too including puzzles, drawing equipment etc.

The cafe is an added bonus which even has a nice courtyard to dine in too.

An excellent museum

From start to finish this museum is excellent. A friendly welcome, well laid out exhibits, and lots of information. The route is COVID-friendly with plenty of room to wander.
I was fascinated by the huge horde of silver coins.

Worth a perusal of Somerset History

Really worth a wonder around as it gives such a well presented insight to the people who have lived in Somerset over the centuries and the lives they led. Good cafe as well.

It's ok, but I preferred it before it was modernised.

This used to be a great place, full of character and history.
It's still ok and worth visiting, but since the work was done, something has been lost that will probably never return.

I love this place, so much to see and take in. The layout going through the ages makes it much easier to understand.
