Carlisle Cathedral is a gem of a place. It is smaller than many cathedrals but this is part of its charm. It is free to enter (although donations are welcome) apart from the treasury, entry to which costs £1. From the memorial tones and other information around it is possible to find out about the bishops and other churchmen as... More

Carlisle, is the second smallest (after Oxford), of England's ancient cathedrals. Its notable features include some fine figurative stone carving, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the Flowing Decorated Gothic style in England. Although quite "small" you would not think so when inside as the interior height give a great sense of proportion. Check out... More

On arrival we were really impressed with the giant stained glass window It was interesting looking at all the passageways above you and the starry ceiling

What a beautiful place. Well worth the visit if you're ever in Carlisle. Brian, the local guide, was a hive of information.

Cathedral undergoing a lot of retoration with many areas covered by scaffolds and tarpaulins. Nevertheless, this was obviously needed and did not spoil the visit. Still worthwhile to vie the lovely ceiling annnd absorb the atmosphere.

Had a random wander round the cathedral back in September , very old needs updated. Was clean enough but was a musty smell like an old church hall. Overall a very pleasant trip , acoustics in the main hall are epic. Very intricate and well maintained art work in the hall. Stained glass windows also very interesting.

On a day trip to Carlisle we popped in to see the amazing ceiling we had seen photos of. It is certainly very beautiful. Kids enjoyed looking around all the nooks and crannies. Nice and peaceful. Entry free, but donations recommended so easy to pop in for a quick look.
