Nice building; pity it was closed

Attractive wee kirk obviously famous for the royal members of its congregation. Unfortunately, it was closed when we visited so a bit disappointed after a trek up the hill to find it wasn't possible to go inside.

A place you feel you’ve seen before!
Oct. 2019
The first time we visited this lovely little church, I had the strongest feelings of deja vu, simply because I’ve seen the place so many times on television when the Royal family come here for church services.

This place has been a place of worship since the 9th century and, much later on, a church was built on the current site in 1804. Queen Victoria worshipped there from 1848 and laid the foundation stone for the current, larger church in 1893. All British monarchs since then have regularly worshipped at Crathie Kirk.

As far as Royal visits are concerned however, I was really disappointed to find out that when they attend service, they don’t sit in the main body of the church, and are seated round the corner where the rest of the congregation can’t see them. I wouldn’t dream of calling this elitism, but would suggest that it is a wasted opportunity for them to engage with the public in a small but very meaningful way.

We were on our way to Braemar somstopped off at Crathie for a stroll. It’s always nice to be back here as we have so many memories of seeing royalty here including the late Princess Diana.

Church Service With The Queen
Sep. 2019 • Couples
While visiting Ballater Scotland we drove a few miles down the road to attend the 11:30 services with the Queen present.

The Queen spends August and September at the castle in Balmoral and on Sunday heads to the small little church in Cathie for services.

Wonderful experience to attend such a beautiful service and share the church with the Queen. The choir of young people were amazing.

Amazing experience. Could not take pictures anywhere near the church or grounds.

A Place of Royal Worship.
Aug. 2019
We visited here the day of our departure from the area and the day before the Queen and her companions came to worship there apparently. Although we missed Her Royal Highness, I'm afraid I might have found her presence and my motives for worship somewhat challenged by her celebrity – maybe just as well.

We were fortunate to have a quiet visit and hear the enthusiastic stories of our church hostess on the Royal's frequent visits to this humble building over the decades.

This place of worship is full of interesting history, sculptures and photographs, well worth a visit.

A lovely wee kirk
Sep. 2019
When visiting Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar Distillery or on way to/from Braemar a visit to this lovely wee Kirk, where the Royals worship, is well worth a visit. It is a small church in a lovely setting overlooking Balmoral Estate. The church is open most day and is free to enter although you are encouraged to leave a small donation for upkeep. Church members on duty are very welcoming and happy to answer questions.

Balmoral Castle had been on my "to do"list for a while. As we visited on a Sunday we decided to go to a service at Crathie as well.Unknown to us was that Her Majesty the Queen was visiting unofficially before her annual Scottish holiday!
We didn't see her Majesty in church as the Royal party sat round a corner. It was a normal service with the usual every Sunday congregation.
As we came out a car went past. Her Majesty was in it and she waved.Made the visit very special!
