The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names. Access: The SJT provides regular captioned and audio described performances and has infrared and induction loop systems. There is level access to the Box Office and disabled toilets, a wheelchair lift to the Shop and a passenger lift giving access to all floors. There are designated wheelchair spaces in both theatres, which are easily accessible from the lift. Please notify the Box Office at the time of booking if you require wheelchair access. Access to some seats in The Round and The McCarthy is via steps, please advise staff when booking if you have any specific seating requirements.

The SJT production of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice reveals fresh aspects of the play. The delicate watercolour portrayal of Little Voice by Serena Manteghi is masterful and touching. Throughout you are deeply concerned about the outcome of the relentless emotional abuse dished...More

We recently watched 2 shows at the theatre whilst holidaying in nearby Sleights. What a good choice! Both shows were mesmerising and highly emotive. A lovely theatre with a great atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed both of our visits and would highly recommend a visit! We loved...More

Once again, a great production by SJT. I'm always amazed by how well they stage productions in the round here. On this occasion, every available space (including parts of the audience auditorium!) used as acting space meaning you really felt involved in the production. Excellent...More

We recently went to see Di and Viv and Rose which was excellent. The location is superb, with a varied programme of plays with modern themes - including those of Alan Ayckbourn, of course.

Alan Ayckbourn's 'Taking Steps' was an outstanding farce from start to finish with the absolutely brilliant performances of every cast member to the very clever set. And no other theatre can surely do it justice than the Stephen Joseph in the round. I haven't laughed...More

A wonderful night at the SJT. An extremely funny production brilliantly taking place supposedly on 3 floors (very cleverly done on one stage) of a dilapidated possibly haunted property (the ghost of Scarlet Lucy). I laughed all the way through, as did the rest of...More

Having been a visitor to this theatre for nearly 50 years (went when it used to be Theatre-in-the-Round at the library), I've always enjoyed our trips to Scarborough to see a production once or twice a year. The uniqueness of the central stage (and subsequent...More

Yes, although there is usually a 'dark' period of a week or two for building maintenance. Call the Box Office or check what's on via the website.
