The West Somerset Railway has a vast amount going for it. Too much to itemize, in fact. But a superb website provides a detailed account of all the attractions from the catering arrangements to displays, timetable and special events, and the courses that will teach you to drive a 'steamer' or 'diesel' and even the scheme to blast your ashes... What isn't there to love about a quaint English village before Christmas and a ride on a steam train. Parking at the Bishops Lydeard filled up quickly - this is a popular event, so allow enough time to find parking. BUT the whole railway experience is well organised and a real enjoyment. We took the trip to Minehead and the... More

Visited Minehead station...the trains were not running but had a look around the station. Nice old station with a couple of steam trains to see.

This is a long railway almost 24 miles of track through beautiful countryside. The fleet of Steam engines is varied with some large and some smaller ones being used. The nature of the track requires a certain amount of power and there is something m engine powering along the beautiful Somerset countryside. There is always room so apart from special... More

We caught the steam train from Minehead Station only one stop (7 mins) to Dunster Station. From there we walked to Dunster village and visited the castle. The train was £6 adult £3 child or family of four £15 return ticket (high season / half term). The walk is 15 mins to the village and entrance to the castle is... More

We travelled from Bishops Lydeard station to Dunster on the Dunster Castle Express steam train. It was a lovely day out with dedicated volunteers on the West Somerset Railway. Out ticket covered both the train ride and entrance into the Castle. As we went on the day ( only runs a couple of times a week ) we were on... More

We spent a great day riding the rails between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, enjoying the pleasures of steam. It must be one of the longest lines of its kind there is, passing through delightful countryside and beautiful stations. The staff were very friendly and the prices at the buffet car very reasonable. To be repeated and recommended.

Great little railway line, steam engines. Lovely old carriages. Stations from a bygone age. Good value, all donations welcome as it is all run by volunteers. Well worth a visit.
