After a morning in Chepstow shopping, we decided to head over to Tintern Abbey. I had been there as a boy, but this was the wife's first visit. This Abbey is probably one the most impressive Derelict Abbey's we have visited. The abbey it's self...More

We visited this site with our Dog, Chester. Set in the beautiful valley and quite spectacular to look at.

Tintern Abbey is a beautiful ruin in a stunning location next to the river. You have to pay to park in the car park near-by but the cost can be reimbursed in the shop when you purchase something. In it's day it was obviously huge...More

Having visited a number of Abbeys, Tintern is by far the most impressive. It is on vast scale and although in ruins it still maintains a majesty and awe that gives it quite an atmosphere. We visited on a gloriously sunny day, which allowed for...More

Both myself and my 6 year old said we have never felt so small. It is the most awe inspiring place I think I have ever visited. Set in an idyllic location it just rises up like a proud symbol of history. The staff were...More

Tintern Abbey is a lovely serene, peaceful place to visit. I was pleasantly surprised by this impressive Abbey, the architecture is breathtaking and not as ruined as some I have visited. The Abbey is set in beautiful surroundings, and I guess this was helped by...More

Good place to visit. Very similar to Rievaulx Abbey. Guide book useful. Car parking expensive but can spend voucher in shop.

We were very disappointed by Tintern Abbey. Any atmosphere it may have was destroyed by an extremely pretentious temporary building that had been erected in the nave, preventing public access to that part of the site. Apparently there had been a "private function" there the...More

This was our first visit to Tintern - what a beautiful drive through amazing countryside from Abergavenny, and a lovely visit when we got there. The ruins are extremely atmospheric - give you a real sense of what it must have been like to be...More

Even though it was raining when we visited we still stayed a couple of hours. The time soon flies with so much detail to take in and, due to the weather, we did not get to explore around the grounds or Tintern... More

As the previous traveler wrote it is visible from A466. You can see quite a bit from its car park if you don't have time to go inside although it would be a shame to miss its grandeur.

Not sure about a train from Chepstow to Tintern Abbey but there is a regular bus service, the No 69, from Chepstow Bus Station. You need to check the times online but in rough order, peak week days, evey 35 mins and then... More
