Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden was created around 1830 by Thomas Parr, a Warrington banker, as part of his estate totalling 150 acres. In the 1950's the estate was broken up and land was sold. In the 1970's the family mansion was destroyed in a fire and was demolished. The only surviving part of the original estate was the walled garden which over time became neglected and managed by different groups. As a result of assistance from the local community, the Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden and funding provided by English Partnerships and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the four-acre walled garden has now been restored to its former glory. The garden compromises of a Victorian kitchen garden with eight fully restored glass houses and a pleasure garden with three ponds. Today, this secret garden is a true asset to the community with an array of events, school programmes and workshops for adults, groups, children and families. Charges apply for some activities and events. New amenities include a community space, toilets, picnic tables and the Fountain Room Cafe which is open from 10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. The cafe may also open for selected events so please check the website or contact the office in advance. Closed Mondays

We visited Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden for lunch on 19 February 2017. We had popped in a few weeks ago and were really impressed with that first visit. This time we enjoyed a snack and drinks for six of us and, once again, the service was excellent (even though it was busy). Dog walkers were sitting outside with their dogs... More

Yesterday we had a great walk around the Appleton Thorn and Grappenhall areas. It was a lovely morning and it was good to be out in the open air. We called for a drink in Grappenhall and had a lovely cup of tea in the gardens of Grappenhall Hess. I have often been told what a lovely place it is... More

I walk my dog daily and on occasions we meander up past the cricket club from Grappenhall Village to the Walled Garden. When we do go this route I often pop my head into the Walled Gardens for a look, and to see if there is any nice produce on offer from the store. It is always beautifully kept and... More

This is a lovely place to visit and have a walk around followed by a pit stop for a coffee. This is well maintained and very pretty. I particularly like looking at all the fruit and vegetables they are growing. I went with the kids and the dog and we all felt very welcome.

Small compared to nearby Walton Gardens but definitely worth a visit. Gardens are well looked after and have a cafe open at weekends. Great if you just want a quiet walk for an hour or so, I've never seen it crowded.

After years living in Warrington I have only just discovered Grappenhall Heys. Its simply a pleasant place to walk alone, with kids or a dog (on a lead in the gardened/pond area). I go into the woods with the dog down the long path running through the fields. You have different places to explore. Lovely little fruit trees walled garden... More

Just to let you know that the café is very dog friendly - you can leave your dog just outside whilst you place your order and then either enjoy your food/beverage at our tables outside the glasshouses or if the weather is inclement, under the gazebo in the rear yard. More

Lovely food and friendly service, although very slow at times and could possibly be improved with waitress service. The glass houses are very atmospheric, and lighting would mean that they could open more in winter months for private parties and other events.
