Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

On a fine day, we found this a wonderful place to take a stroll around. We didn't go for the head phone tour but probably wish that we had - I think we would have got more out of it. However it is quite large inside and took longer than we thought to walk around the whole site. It had... More

Far reaching views on a good day. Large well preserved castle. Suitable for the able bodied as there are a lot of walls to walk on to get the best views. Free to NT members

As you approach Peel you cant miss this imposing building. The only downside for me is that there are too many steps, so if your energetic or a walker, you will love this as a fair bit of exercise. I am told by those who took the stairs challenge the views are amazing. A lovely panoramic view of Peel, as... More

Staff brilliant at explaining to the young children about the rabbits and the cat that culls them. Such a small point but prepared us for rabbit remains. In fact children were disappointed not to find some. Shame about the cost of audio tour and no information boards but local knowledge helped here. The children and some adults loved rolling down... Stunning castle and views however spoilt by somebody in management being mean by charging £5 per person for audio guild, no information boards to read, it's a shame as this has the potential to take our history away by charging absurd prices for information, very disappointed in peel castle management
