Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

A 10 minute walk from Whitley Bay caravan park, and well worth it. A small entrance fee gives access to the lighthouse and visitor centre and there is also a gift shop and cafe. If you're brave enough, you can climb the stairs up to the light chamber... or if you're not there's a screen at the bottom of the... More

Very surreal walking over the causeway to the lighthouse just as the tide is receding, even more fun trying to beat it back over to the mainland again! Beautifully preserved working lighthouse with superb views, make sure you take your camera as there are almost always basking seals around the rocks.

Came up from Cornwall to Newcastle for a party, wanted to make the most of our visit whilst there. On a beautiful sunny Saturday morning we walked the causeway, into the light house right up to the top, gorgeous views, saw loads of seals.... couldnt have been better. Great inexpensive attraction for the area, didnt expect to see seals. Well... More

Out for a bike ride & rode over the causeway & walked up to the lighthouse, it offers incredible views of the coastline & allows for some fantastic images to be caught on camera as the sun is setting, no seals in sight today but lots of families making the most of the glorious weather with children fishing in the... Have spent the last week with family and friends in Tynemouth for the Easter holidays, this has been one of the best places we have visited this week. Beautiful! Spent a lovely few hours here, the view is amazing and spotting some seals was a lovely bonus!

Great views from this island and not far from caravan park we were staying at. You can see right along the beach to the other end of bay to the town.

This lighthouse makes a ideal walk for those who just like a scenic route that isn't too far busy. Although beware that the water levels can change rapidly during the evening.

Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a wonderful view across Whitley Bay. Children as young as 6 and adults as old as 80 made the ascent to experience a wonderful vista of the North Sea coast. Seals were spotted on the rocks below and we went fishing for crabs in the rock pools around the lighthouse. Picnic on... More

Walked across the short causeway at low tide to visit the small shop (+loos) Highlight were the seals. Good spot for birders if you.re interested. Food vans and plenty of seats in nearby car park. Nice spot.
