This castle gradually went out of use and by Tudor times was neglected. Ironically, because it was no longer of strategic importance, it's outer walls are reasonably well preserved. This makes it a charming place to visit. The views from the remains of the keep...More

Very interesting part of Pickering's history. Easy to get to, right in town, parking on site, cheap entry fee and good signs detailing historical facts. Basically ruins but still interesting.

After Hastings the Conquerer brought over a completely new style of fortification called a Motte & Bailey Castle. These, initially with just wood defences, could be erected very quickly, possibly in as little as 2 or 3 weeks, and did much to consolidate his hold...More

Having spent the day on the NYMR, we popped into see Pickering castle on the way home. Although I wouldn't go out of my way to visit the castle, it's worth seeing if in the area.

This is a large ruin, with outer towers, inner foundations, a small intact church, and part of the castle. It is an English Heritage site. There was a kestril with young chicks in one of the arrow slots and a telescope had been set up...More

Having joined English Heritage in the recent past, we made a point of seeking Pickering Castle out. We much enjoyed the visit - quite a compact site, and one can visualise what the castle would have been like during its period of operation. There is...More

Been to Pickering so many times and never knew this was here! English Heritage site so admission prices not cheap, but much softened by the lovely Rachael at the entry area, who could sell snow to eskimos. The curtain walls and moat are still in...More

It may not look like much from afar, but Pickering Castle has an amazing amount of remains. We walked up from the town and saw a section of the outer wall that was pretty featureless, but once you are inside you realise the size and...More

Yes, you can go round in a wheelchair, but there are some restrictions, and dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.

I have visited Pickering Castle many times, and have seen people with their dogs on the castle grounds, and always on a lead. So I am certain that it is allowed.
