Tolquhon Castle is easier to pronounce than it sounds, the local dialect abbreviating it to approximately "Tawhon". Built in the 1580's primarily as a stately home for the Forbes clan, it never really saw use as a defensive building. Nevertheless, the castle was a busy place, and the excellent information boards throughout give some idea of the way it acted... More

The castle is really beautiful and still well preserved. One gets quite a few information about how the people used to live in the castle and can walk basically everywhere in the castle. Further, the staff was really nice and helped us to get some information when we had problems with a tire on our car.

One of the best I've visited ! Let your imagination run wild 😉 Beautiful castle and beautiful surroundings. Nice to see so much still intact. Not very often you see this apart from the castles that have been renovated. A must see for anyone visiting Aberdeenshire.

Our three year old grandson loves to visit castles. On Saturday 13th August we took him and his brother to see Tolquhon Castle which we knew he would love. I checked on the web site to make sure we would be able to get in. He was so excited when we got there and couldn't wait to get in. Imagine... More

I visited tolquhon castle with my friend on the 5th August. I was very excited for this as it is a ruin type castle. I arrived at 9.30 bearing in mind it says online and their phone line that the castle is open from 0930. When I arrived, there was no sign of anyone. Thinking it would be a quiet... More

We had the castle to ourselves when we visited so took our time exploring everywhere and taking plenty of photographs. The castle is only small but it just has something about it. It is still really well preserved and some of the stonework on the front of the building is still near perfect. You can go up the towers and... More

Secluded ruin. Helpful warden, Theresa, gave us some interesting insight into the castle as well as recommended other places to see. Information boards about the rooms and history throughout the property. Only toilet is inside the ticket office which was closed while the warden was out cleaning the property.

We had the whole grounds to ourselves for a couple of hours and enjoyed climbing the winding staircases and exploring all the different rooms. The woman working in the shop was lovely also. Loads of space in the grounds for my 2 year old to safely run around and enjoy the nice day. Would recommend for a family afternoon out
