Birnbeck Pier, known locally as the Old Pier, stands on the North Somerset coastline at Weston-super-Mare. Built between 1864 and 1867, it is a unique structure, being the only British pier that links the mainland to an island. Over its lifetime it has enjoyed mixed fortunes. In its heyday it was the Victorian equivalent of a modern theme-park, but has been shut to the public since 1994.

The once famous pier is now badly in need of repair and visitors are not allowed onto it. There is a small shop that fund-raises for the refurbishment of the pier and this sells drinks, and souvenirs. On a good day it's a pleasant walk...More

The "Renovations team" are busy raising funds to renovate the pier and will do so once the owner agreed to meet them, which will be brilliant once it is finished.

Good venue, loads of bar staff on and easy to get a drink considering 800 plus at the venue and a great location for a gig.

Rusting pier leading to small island with derelict buildings, clearly too far gone to save by repair, a complete rebuild would be required. Presumably there is insufficient value in the potential to justify the serious outlay that would be required and the local authority does...More

This crumbling relic is a curious sight. It's at the north end of Weston, and while the pier itself is not visitable, the sight of it is interesting and curiously picturesque. Worth taking a walk up to this end of town just to see it.
