This was on our bucket list & well worth it.

I* had read about this village when at home in the UK so we thought we would add it to our itinerary & we were not disappointed, the tour was well worth the expense, but it is a minimum of 5 people, we just teamed up with two more couples. If you decide to do ensure you don't put in the donation box (unless you want too) as this is a separate cost centre. The tour was really very good & so informative. Also all the old tribal clothes are worn every Wednesday evening at 7.00pm (you are allowed to attend).

Fascinating

This is definitely a highlight of this region not to be missed. I would highly recommend doing the guided tour rather than just popping into the museum. Seeing the different dwellings, instruments and art and learning about the culture and traditions of the Gitxsan people was fascinating.

A place of peace & learning.

We spent about 3 hours. Our delightful young guide took us through 3 longhouses & explained the history of the area. The grounds just had such an aura of peace. A soft time-out.

Nice little museum

Sadly we were unable to have a guided tour of the houses which would have made quite a difference to our visit, but the museum was really interesting (no charge, donations only), and we could see the setting by the river (just like a model in the museum in Victoria!)

It was well worth the price of the tour plus the nearly hour of time, to be able to go into the Frog House, the Eagle House, and the Fireweed House, three important representations of long houses used by the First Nations people of this whole Northwest region.

However, we really regretted that they could not provide helps for totem pole interpretation. Our guide was able to provide comments on a few figures on a couple of the poles. But we really wanted a printed sheet. We found clues about a couple of the images on one pole spread through comments on three or more post cards they sell. No book that would help, either.

Plus, while they would not allow photos inside the buildings, it would have been wonderful to have bought a pamphlet or small booklet that would have had pictures (or even drawings or sketches).

If they would have had either (or both), we would give fives stars.

Take the Tour

This recreated Gitxsan First Nations village on the banks of the Skeena River, provides an insight into the lives of the native people. I recommend you take the guided tour, to see some fantastic artefacts in each of the longhouses and here the interesting stories of how people lived

A must do if you are in the area of New Hazelton.

The small museum if a gem which does not overwhelm or bore you. What it does is present quality artifacts which are caused to clearly explain the history of the local people.

Interesting examples of clan totem poles.

We had the good fortune to be able to talk for an hour with the site manager and get a clear understanding of the relationship between the Canadian government and the First Nation Peoples.

a wonderful place in a beautiful setting. The Campground is immaculate. the staff is friendly and helpful. Very interesting historical village offers a real insight into the Ksan culture and history

If you have any interest in BC history and the art and architecture of our indigenous people this is a must see. Gorgeous buildings and setting. Many beautiful examples of carving and architecture.
