- G_CambridgeCambridge, United Kingdom28 contributionsA must visit! We visited as part of our organised trip with few expectations. However, it was an absolute joy to see the passion of the team working here and the genuine love for the bears. Our guide, Mary, was very knowledgeable about each and every bear and shared so much of her personal experience with us. A heart wrenching visit but not to be missed.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 17, 2023
- jaredites1Cairo, Egypt347 contributionsBrown Bear Reserve Safe for kidsQuick 30min drive from Braşov, and worth the effort to see the brown bears. Over 100 are kept in the fenced preserve keeping them safe and well. The guide during the 1 hour walk was knowledgeable and friendly. Tickets can be bought online, just show the QR code upon arrival.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 22, 2023
- munchtasticRayleigh, United Kingdom103 contributionsFabulous sanctuaryThis bear (and dogs, wolves, horses, owl) sanctuary is off the beaten track. The tour guide was very informative and obviously cared for the bears health and wellbeing. The bears that were close to the barriers still need the human interaction from a life of unnatural living but were also told to leave an area when one of the bears started doing their old tricks so not to upset the bear anymore. All males are castrated so no new bears are born in captivity. Definitely a place to visit when in Romania.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 15, 2024
- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,312 contributionsBrilliant PlacePicked up at a gas station by a minibus, and taken up a long dirt track road to the sanctuary. Really impressive couple of hours with guide Maria who was very knowledgeable not only about bears in general, but about the individual circumstances of each and ever one that was rescued. They can never be released back into the wild because of their various injuries & maltreatments/ loss of natural behaviours. The males are castrated, they are all inoculated every year and given food & vet care, whilst roaming around massive forest enclosures. We saw LOTS of bears, but none of the five wolves they also have. Huge flocks of ravens clean up all the food leftover from the bears. Fascinating, interesting and moving all at the same time. Highly recommended.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 15, 2024

Allow about 1h15 for the tour. Very interesting and Slyvie was a great guide. More than bears, there’s wolves and turtles there. It’s a nice way to find the centre. Just have tissues ready for the welcome video. I’d recommend the later tour just so you’re not rushed finishing and can ask more questions/visit gift shop etc. we also saw them feeding the bears on our tour (not sure if this happens at the 9.30 tour). Please note gift shop is cash only and you may want to by something as proceeds go to the foundation. Beautiful views on top of the hill where it’s located. All outdoors do bring a waterproof in case.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 7, 2024
- 1983LauraC19831 contributionGreat experience!Great experience! The tour was approximately 1 one and a half hours. The guide was nice and you can feel they really care and believe in what they do which is amazing. At the beginning of the tour the guide showed us a very sad video about some of the bears and I couldn't hold back my tears; the rest of the tour was interesting and I would recommend everyone to visit this place.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 3, 2024

The tour guide wad very knowledgeable and was able to engage our children in what she was talking abou(age 6 and 7). The bear habitat is great. This place is a little of the main road on a rough but easily passable load.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 23, 2024
- ReillyWestcliff-on-Sea, United Kingdom8 contributionsAn incredible experienceAn amazing experience, you can really tell the people there love their work and the bears they care for. Could not recommend enough! Go here instead of a zoo if you want to learn about brown bears in their natural habitat. Although not compulsory I would recommend a car to get there, and it is a walking tour so although not challenging some mobility is required to climb up gravel bathed tracks on hills.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2024

I have mixed feelings about the place. Its not cheap to get in and there is a charge of 10 Euros to use a camera (phones are free), but having levied that charge there is nowhere to take photographs without a fence in front of the bears. They are missing a trick here - a hide or a wall with slits in it like other places would be a big draw for photographers and provide further income. There are no seats on the tour route and none at the entrance, where it may be necessary to wait for the tour to start. Anyone who is a little infirm may have some problems.
There are other animals there apart from the bears. A deer fawn was in a lone enclosure, having been found in the forest. There was no explanation why it had been removed from its mother. There were young bear cubs also having been brought in and on view, with no apparent reason for them being there other than they had been found in the forest. There does not appear to be any programmes for releasing bears whenever that is possible. So in many respects, it felt like a zoo visit and I am personally uncomfortable with the level of anthorpomorphism that is evident.
The plus side is that the bears all look fit and very healthy, and there is no doubting the level of care and commitment from the staff. The grounds are well cared for and the guide was knowledgeable on the backgrounds of each of the bears.
All in all, I think they are doing an excellent job with real passion, but it would help to be a little more sympathetic to the visitors. I wouldn't return, but I would encourage others to visit and treat it as an educational experience.

We have an ace time at this Sanctuary, we purchased tickets on line and got a Bolt from Brasov which took around 35/40 minutes drive. The sanctuary is on top of a hill with a gravel road leading to it. The Bolt driver drove us straight to the top. Learnt a lot about the bears and saw so many of them. Bears galore. The guide told us the background stories of some of the bears that had been rescued. The tour is around one hour duration. There is a snack shop and toilets at the venue but you can’t access them whilst on the tour. It is the largest European bear sanctuary in the world.
On the way back, we ordered a bolt but the driver refused to drive up the hill and asked us to walk down to the road which would have taken about 20/25 minutes in the scorching sun. There are lots of dogs on the way down which have reportedly bitten people at times. We asked the sanctuary staff for help , they were very friendly and spoke to some other people who were driving in their own cars and very kindly agreed to give us a lift down the hill to the road. Once on the road it was very easy to pick up a bolt to take us back to Brasov. The bolt price was around £35:00 in total for round trip which is a lot cheaper than purchasing an escorted tour to the sanctuary. Even cheaper if you are travelling in a group and can share the bolt cost. Go and see the bears you won’t be disappointed.

Impressive stories of the bears, our guide was very nice and offered us a lot of information, also responded to all of our questions. It was an awesome experience to see how a bear who spend over a decade în captivity is discovering that life isn't about riding the bike or entertain few people in circus or zoo. Here they are discovering the true freedom. The staff seems to be very attached of each bear, offering them all the food and the medical assistance they need. We will recommend this place to visit, it changed our perception about this wonderfull animals.

We visited the Bear sanctuary on our second day in Romania, whilst we had a private taxi there, there’s plenty of parking if you are driving so finding a space shouldn’t be a problem at all.
Probably advisable to pre-book your tickets to ensure you get access as we were the first group in for the day but it was quite busy when we left.
Maria, our guide, was awesome. Clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the bears and her love of them shines through as she guides you round the sanctuary. She literally knows and can name every single one of them!
There’s so much good to learn about these bears but also so much bad.
The Good – they all have their own characters and foibles, their own charming and endearing ways about them. And that they are now safe from harm in the sanctuary is fantastic.
The Bad – Well, it’s humans really. And how they punished and abused these majestic creatures. Many heart-breaking stories of how they suffered before finding sanctuary.
Even though some of the information is so sad to hear its important we listen and educate future generations in an attempt to stop it repeating again and again.
Our trip there lasted about an hour and a half, the pathways are large gravels roads and in places can be quite steep but it’s well worth a visit as to see the bears so closely is inspiring, we were lucky as some of the bears heard their food truck and about 20 of them appeared out of the woods. 20 brown bears all in one place really is quite a sight I will never forget.
Thank you Maria and Thank you Libearty Bear Sanctuary.

One of the main reason for visiting Romania. Romania has the highest population of brown bears in Europe. It is good to see how well these bears are cared for after a tough life inflicted by humans. The sanctuary only have 2 visiting tours a day so the bears can be left alone for the rest of the times. They feed the bears during the tour times so visitors get to see the bears. There's plenty of opportunities to take photos of the bears and the guide gives an informative tour.

The tour was absolutely incredible. We had our own personal guide, Valentin, who took us around to many more parts of the sanctuary than the shorter experience goes. We learned so much about the bears and were able to ask many questions. The tour was more intimate with him, as it was just us and he was fantastic! We were able to stay longer at some places to watch the bears a little closer. The teddy bear museum was beautiful to see, and the bunker was a cool experience.
This bear sanctuary is an incredible not for profit doing wonderful things to help these poorly treated animals enjoy the rest of their lives. Even though the VIP tour was more expensive, your money for the ticket goes back in to the sanctuary to help them care for the bears, so you can think of it as a donation.

The Zărnești Bear Reserve or Sanctuarul Libearty Zărnești is a holding station for previously captive brown bears with tours in English and Romanian. There are over 100 brown bears on the extensive grounds and you can learn many stories of the mostly abused animals. Admission costs 80 RON for adults and 35 RON for children, with a maximum of 40 people. The tours take place daily except Mondays at 9:30 and 10:45 and last about 1 hour.
We found the tour absolutely impressive and have great respect for the dedication of the staff.

Visiting this sanctuary is not only about watching bears, is about watching survivors. Every bear has a story - a sad story, sometimes with a happy end, sometimes not. All of them suffered a lot in the past, just to please the vanity of some humans. Due to their old traumas, some of the bears are not so happy to expose themselves to the visitors, so you may not see all the animals during your tour. During our visit, one tourist was very disappointed because the bears were not lined up for the visitors, like in a regular zoo. The guides are focused on the safety of the visitors. Advise: bring a binocular with you!

We had a wonderful time visiting the bears at Libearty Bear Sanctuary. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They are obviously very ethical and we were really pleased to be able to support their work by booking a tour, and also by adopting a bear afterwards. The guide was fantastic, there were a large number of us on the tour and he did a great job of answering everyone's questions and telling all the stories of how the bears came to be at the Sanctuary. We were really blown away by the care that they take with looking after the bears. It was an amazing way to see them up close but in an ethical environment too.
One thing to note is that it is very difficult to get here as there is no public transport, obviously it is set far away from the town of Zarnesti in the forest on the side of the mountains. We took a Bolt from Brasov both to get there and back and I think this cost about 85 lei each way. The last 10 minutes of the journey is up a very winding dirt track - made more dangerous on our visit by snow and ice and lots of mud. We were very glad we were not driving ourselves.

Hi we had a private driver take us there as there is no public transport to the Sanctuary. It is best to book in advance as there are limited numbers allowed on each of the walking tours. It is a wonderful place and I am sure you will enjoy it.
