Total tourist crap, but I thought it was fun.

The first thing they made us do was a tour. It cost something like $6-8$. The tour is rather short . Then they turn you loose on their pile of rocks. The cynically part of me... read more

I would not recommend this place with your kids. A fee for a menial guide tour, they don't take you inside the mine. Just for a ridiculous intro you end up paying 32$ and they add 3$ per pound for a collection of raw material you do outside! :( a TOTAL RIP OFF!)

Thank you for posting Naz, we do appreciate your feedback. The amethyst mine is actually an open quarry that visitors can view from an observation deck on the top. Due to safety concerns, we can't let anyone into the mine who doesn't have the proper equipment, training, and expertise (we don't want anyone getting hurt!). We believe that the mine... More

Drove from Iowa to Thunder Bay. Stayed at the Vahalla Inn, which was wonderful, clean, and awesome food. In the morning did a little more site seeing in Thunder Bay and then ventured to the Mine. A lot of history behind the mine, and really enjoyed seeing the LARGE slabs of Amethyst that they used to cut slabs from, maybe... More

Expensive, seen nothing... Amethyst shop at the entrance. To get in you have to pay $8/person, then you end on a scarp pile where you can 'chose' from and pay by lbs on your way out. What a waste of time and money. Seen no mine panorama...

The first thing they made us do was a tour. It cost something like $6-8$. The tour is rather short . Then they turn you loose on their pile of rocks. My husband and I were a little disappointed with not being able to hammer and chisel on the leftover rubble. Don't bother with taking the tools to this mine you can only shuffle through the loose stuff but there was plenty of amethyst laying around.

We took a drive out to the Amethyst Mine last week so we could pick our own pieces of amethyst up. It was fun and interesting to see all the different shapes and sizes that were available.

We only stayed for about an hour but you could bring your lunch and stay for a long time. fun for a family outing .If you want you can buy rocks by the pound $3. Then you can take them and do wonderful things like tumbling for jewelry or make... More

This was our second time here. We love it! So much fun! All ages enjoy it! We got bags for less than $20.00! We will definitely be back. We don't even look at the other mines in the area! Family owned and operated. Visited in August this time. No flies!!

We heard this was a great place to explore and so glad we found it! A little far out but easy drive and fun navigating the dirt road and hills...fun! Interesting geology of the mine and historic shifting of the fault! Long family history and still working it! Enjoyed the digging of the rock fields and finding our own gems!... More
