    Wonderful experience for my family
Tim was a great tour guide. You could tell he is passionate about amethyst and very knowledgeable. My children 7, 10, and 13 loved mining for amethyst. I could have spent the whole day searching for beautiful gems. This was a nice experience!
Thank You, Kate. I appreciate your kind comments and am happy to learn that your children loved mining for amethyst.

    Ground glistening with purple crystals
Of the three amethyst mines I visited in Thunder Bay, this one is the only one that provides a formal tour. It's also slightly more expensive than the other two: $10 to get in and $5/pound for any amethysts you find that you wish to take home. They also have a nice gift shop and luckily, take visa, if you need it (I still recommend bringing cash). There's much more on display here and to explore, so it would be my first choice for a school or family trip/ any trip with kids, especially younger children. Also ideal for newbies because it's much easier to find crystals here. The crystals I found were very dark purple (gorgeous deep colour). There's an excellent selection of garden rocks of all sizes for sale also. If you're a serious rockhound looking for a bargain find, this might not be your first choice, but I'd still hit it up. If you're anyone else interested in amethysts, you have to check this place out!!
Thank you for your detailed at thoughtful reivew, Carmen.

Highly recommend the Amethyst Mine Panorama!
Visiting an Amethyst mine with a friend and fellow rockhound has been a goal for several years. After researching, we concluded the Panorama Mine is the one to visit. We made the right choice! We arrived in the morning when they opened and were greeted by the friendly staff and owners. The tour was fun and informative and just the right length. I recommend you participate to appreciate the mining process. We started out by picking up amethyst off the field, hosing them off and then just sitting and digging in the area. We cleaned our finds at the tables and boxed up our favorites. The staff allowed us to store them inside while we went back out to the field to dig a few more hours. We met and visited with lovely people and families from all over Canada and the states. We had packed a picnic lunch so we could stay all day and there are outdoor toilets in site. At the end of the day we culled our amethyst finds and settled on our favorites. We truly enjoyed our day at Panorama Mines. The drive out was spectacular as well.
We are thrilled to learn that you finally made it to Panorama, Lorijune. It sounds like you had a very memorable day interacting with the mine owners and staff as well as families from across Canada. Treasure your amethyst crystals; how cool is it that you dug them yourself! We appreciate your 5-star review!

Absolutely amazing family experience. Our family frequently hunts for rocks wherever we go, and are avid rock collectors. We love searching for quartz and other “crystals” in parking lots, parks, you name it.
My son was THRILLED to find “different” rocks in the parking lot upon arrival. He proudly marched into the shop and displayed his finds to everyone and he was offered a bag for his parking lot rocks! This set the tune for our afternoon.
We went on a delightful tour which included the history of the site, and even a view into the excavating area. Highly interactive and educational - for the WHOLE family. The mine is also pet friendly, with signage insisting to bring your animals in rather than leaving them in a hot car.
After the tour we were released to the digging area with buckets to find our haul. It was amazing to see a sea of purple, with crystals varying in size from a grain of sand to boulders. We left with a large box FILLED with “treasure”, and my little guy proudly strutted to our vehicle with his “parking lot rocks”.
A MUST for rock lovers who are passing through. A family owned and operated treasure in the north west of Ontario that made THIS rock hunter’s dream come true.

I am delighted that you and your "little guy" had an "absolutely amazing family experience" at Panorama, Kchorsfall! Your review is making me grin from ear-to-ear as I imagine your family searching the parking lot for rocks (minerals). It seems like you have another generation of rock-hounder on your hands. I am so pleased that your visit to Panorama made "THIS rock hunter's dream come true" and that you took the time to share your experience with us. Thank You! Good luck with your rock-hounding.

Our family owned and operated business appreicates your 5-star review, Debbie. We are pleased you enjoyed the tour and our fee-dig area. We are proud that the amethyst products sold in our gift shop are mined right here at Amethyst Mine Panorma. Thank you for taking the time to post a review and we hope to see you again.

We always visit Panorama Amethyst mine when we are in the area .You can dig and pick amethyst. It’s all over, kids will love how easy and fun it is it’s underfoot, and in piles ,and there is a sorting reject bin where you can find amazing pieces with little effort. They are dog friendly which is nice. You go at your own comfort and interest level, you can find other minerals such as mica as well.I promise this is the best amethyst mine in the area (maybe all of Canada )Highly recommend.

5-stars and a 'highly recommended' are appreciated, Karinguyton! Pro tip: The 'reject bin' often contains amethyst pieces that can be collected with very little effort. If you did use this option, we won't tell, if you won't.

We went there on a Cold rainy day. Lots of amethyst around to pick up.
The tour was short and I thought it was a bit pricy for the content. ( 5 minutes)
$4 per pound of rock can add up pretty fast. I think it’s expensive, one stone was $28.00, and nothing spectacular.

Thanks for you review, Annekara. Cold rainy days are not always the best for outdoor tours, but make sure you read the interpretative information inside in the Welcome Centre. It is always warm and dry in there. Pro tip: Digging for amethyst in the rain is the best, as the rain washes off the dirt and makes the amethyst very visible.

Driving home(eastern Ontario) from Alberta and took a chance turning in when we saw the sign - wasn’t sure what to expect but what an absolute delight! We enjoyed Tim’s tour and then poking around for pieces of amethyst to bring home…..my girls and I would have stayed all day and scoured around if I could have sent my husband for a round of golf! One of the highlights of our 2 weeks away from home, would recommend for all ages!

I know, who doesn't love a treasure hunt? Thank you for your delightful review, Hillside_Honeygirl. Many people are unsure of what to expect when visiting an attraction such as ours for the 1st time and reviews such as yours help to manage people's expectations. We are pleased to learn that Panorama was one of the highlights of your trip and hope to host your family again. Thanks again!
