My girlfriend is a rockhound, this was heaven for her! This would be a good place for a family outing, they have picnic tables and plenty of parking for large RVs. Bring sunscreen and water!

Parking, picnics and plenty of purple. Located 60 KM from Thunder Bay, the mine is a nice day trip for families!

This was my second time being here but only my first with the whole family. The two guides (probably university students) were VERY knowledgeable, and very helpful. It is an open mine. You get to scavenge amethyst on the surface. You pay by the pound...More

Thanks for the review. Yes, our tour guides this year are university students - we are so lucky to have them, they provide top-notch, fun and educational tours for visitors to the mine.

Learnt about this mine first on way to Thunder Bay as it's heavily advertised as the largest mine. The drive in through a non-paved road was long. We didn't know about the admission fee until we're close to the mine, so it was too late...More

Thanks for taking the time to post about Amethyst Mine Panorama, even after such a short visit. We are disappointed to learn that you did not have time to experience a guided tour or to dig-your-own amethyst. Maybe next time.

We headed out from Thunderbay with our grandsons for a great morning of rock hounding. The amethyst was literally everywhere- so easy to pick up even for the little ones. We came away with 20 pounds of quality stone for $60 and the specimens were...More

It was raining so we just wanted to buy some Amethyst to take home. You must pay $8 per person just go look, so we didn't. The road to get there is BAD - if you have an SUV or truck it's probably fine, but...More

We were on a Lake Superior circle tour and had this on the list of things to see. It was very interesting for us, even though we are not particularly 'into' rocks/crystals. We still ended up picking up a couple of pounds of amethyst because...More

My wife and I design and make jewelry. We went to this place to obtain small pieces that could be used to make pendants, bracelets, and earrings. We didn't expect the incredible purple majesty at this place. First, the day we made our original trip...More

Great review! Thank You. We are so pleased to learn that you used our amethyst to make cabs and jewellery. The amethyst material in the digging area is just perfect for that; solid and deep purple. Best of luck with your jewellery business. We look...More

We enjoyed the brief orientation that provided an overview of the mine, its history and how it operates. The kids loved picking through the field for amethyst and we also picked up a couple nice larger feature size pieces to take home. The $8 price...More
