Birdswood is an historic ex-working narrow boat belonging to canal restoration charity The Friends of Cromford Canal. The boat and gift shop at Cromford Wharf are run by a dedicated team of volunteers. Birdswood runs scheduled public trips from March to October. Additionally we operate theme events, school trips and exclusive charters, making the boat an ideal private venue for functions for up to 40 people. Come and enjoy a peaceful, relaxing journey along the scenic, rural Cromford Canal, get up close to the fabulous wildlife, and learn about the unique industrial heritage of the Derwent Valley.

We had a delightful time and learned a great deal. The volunteers who run this operation are amazing. It is obviously a labour of love. Fascinating to see the aqueduct taking the canal over the Derwent River. Highly recommended.

Had a fun afternoon trip on this boat. The water levels where low so we where told to expect a possible return backwards which is exactly what happened but oh the fun and laughs we had prior to this certainly made an entertaining trip. The...More

Booked on line and a couple of early issues with what I think was a volunteer ‘ Have you paid?” resulting in an unnecessary walk to the ticket office . Sorted out though and so to the trip. A very interesting commentary over two hours...More

Yes, this could generously be described as a relaxing trip - However, the speed is so slow and the scenery so unvaried & the view so restricted that you may well be glad when it's all over. In its favour, the crew are all cheery...More

We enjoyed a relaxing two hour round trip in this lovely old horse-drawn barge and were lucky enough to be able to visit the Leawood Pumphouse while the barge was turned around at the half way point. Recommended.

Went here on our holiday and had a canal boat ride for 2 hours. Very slow and relaxing. Had a lovely sandwich in the café before we left.

Light refreshments are available on board - pre-pack food items and hot and cold drinks - but we have no problem with people bringing their own food to consume on board. Birdswood Team.
