Part of the Valley of Temples

This is a part of the Valley walk. Magnificent ruins along with the other temples along the walk. Amazing what the ancients built.

Not much left of this nice little temple but quite impressive at night, if you have no time you might skip it without problems

At the far end of the site, this apparently is the symbol of Sicily, depicted by the column structure, or so told by our guide. As with the whole site, you have to give each example time to wander and take in.

It is actually the temple of Castor & Polluxus but either way a marvellous and tranquil place to visit. It transports you back in time being here.

Ancient architecture always manages to impress me and this structure is just one party of an incredible complex of buildings.

I am not sure you can say which is the best temple to visit - you need to give this site the time that it deserves. We visited in the evening and by the time we go to the last temple it was in the dark and this was beautifully lit up.

Tempio dei Dioscuri, (the brothers Castor and Pollux), built 5th century BC had six columns front and back with thirteen down the sides and measured 34.12 metres x 15.86 metres. The temple was badly damaged by the Carthaginians in 406BC and earthquakes. 19th century restorations have severely compromised the temples original appearance, as materials from different periods were used from... I was looking at it in the view of the city of Agrigento laing behind and was thinking that even after 1000years this will still be standing, but I was not sure about the city with nowadays architecture.

Located at the northern end of the Valley of Temples high on the ridge this we tell you that you have arrived. Take a road to the east here for an entrance. This would get you to the lowest entrance. It would be a slight up. Hill walk to see the other monuments but a easy walk to the exit.

The Temple of Gastor and Pollux is a rebuild version of the 5thBC Temple that was destoyed by an earthquake. The temple is clearly visable fom the Giardino della Kolymbetra and its formation of the four columns include an entablature mounted over the foundings of an originary temple 31 x 13.39 m, and which would have been a Doric perypteros...
