One of the most beautiful ancient churches..

This church dates back to the 1100's and has a rather magical quality to it. It is small, wonderfully ancient in feel, and tranquil. Very special place.

A lovely small chiesa built over Greek 'temple' ruins. Enter through a charming courtyard and then enter the church itself. It is a simple sanctuary and beautifully so; and as noted by all has a glass floor on a portion thereof. You can see through to the Greek temple ruins below; and you can witness the three tiered base layers... More

I loved this place, the floor has glass sections which show the old temples beneath. It was amazing and the energy and atmosphere were very beautiful. There are services here every day and you can tell that its a much loved church with wonderful bells

So often, in Europe, upon visiting a church or mosque, you learn of other ancient religious buildings that stood on the same place, often converted to others. In Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci, pillars and floors of an ancient Greek temple can be seen. It's truly amazing to walk down along the side of the church and see the... More

We decided to go to mass and drove to this church. It's built on one of the many Greek temples that were built on the hilltops surrounding the valley. We were lucky to be able to also attend a christening.

A small gem, set in the winding streets of Agrigento, definitely worth finding and visiting, as is the Duomo, both with attractive wood ceilings.

The church is tucked away in the old part of Agrigento and reached via narrow alleyways and steps. It is built on top of an older building of which remains can be seen in front of the church and through the glass floor in the church.

A very reasonable place to visit, Just 3 euro to go in when we did last summer. There is plenty of history and beautiful sculpture and art to occupy your time while you are there. The scale of the place is quite awe-inspiring.

We decided to go for a stroll around Agrigento to find the cathedral. Somehow we ended up following a group which led to this church. I'm not sure if there is an easier route, but after walking along a very long road with a slight incline, then comes hundreds of steep steps. I would never have found it if we... More

This is a small, charming church built on top of a 5th Century B.C. temple dedicated to Athena, and it incorporates the temple's columns. During the Normal era it was the city's main cathedral, but wasn't grand enough for later prelates, who built a large cathedral not far away. The floor is glass in places so you can see through...
