A unique church that preserves aspects of its ancient Lombard birth. It is a shame that so little of the Lombard frescoes have survived, because the fragments that do exhibit excellent artistic quality. They are both moving, and incredibly rare. The carvings over the door are also wonderful. Make time to go if you are in Benevento.

This church is small and absolutely delightful. There is a strong feeling of community use and caring here. A church in the round and unlike any other sectors old church I have visited.

I always visit Santa Sofia when I go to Benevento ... it oozes pure early Christian spirit. Indeed it was founded by Arechis II of Benevento, a Lombard, around 760 and has managed to conserve a strange purity of spirit (I don't know how else to describe it) inpite of the various restorations through the ages. A tiny jewel left... More

My wife and I got married there, so you can imagine I could be bias. It's just a great experience since the first moment you step in. Try and visit it, then you'll tell me :-)

Was not open when we walked by. The town appears to close down in the middle of the day but not for the normal European lunch break but for the bulk of the day.

If you are in Benevento or in its proximity you must make a stop to see this unique church. Italy is full of churches and cathedrals and basilicas but this small, simple church holds a true and fascinating charm and it is different from most.

If you like to visit old churches and compare various designs then you should visit this one. It has an interesting design which reflects a deviation from other earlier churches. If you in town, it is worth a look.

There are no baroque paintings or elaborate artwork that one associates with Catholic churches. It is more like a Presbyterian church.

An ancient, small church; most important remaining parts of church are doorway and grounds. Easy to see this and all other sites in Benevento in one afternoon.
