Tourists eager to visit the more highly touted cathedral at the Piazza del Duomo walk right by Chiesa di Sant'Irene. This church stands in partial shadow and the exterior doesn't scream, "Visit me!" But it's definitely worth the time to take a peak inside. The interior is beautiful and astonishingly colorful.

But this is one of the most impressive. Not for size, but that the carvings all around, even in the side chapels, are ornate and lovely. Allow time to just sit and contemplate all the work that had to go into the building of it. There was, the day we went, a gentleman sitting by the door suggesting that a... More

We had been in and out of churches all morning and just came across this one and as it carries my mother's name decided to drop in. Similar to many other churches and nothing to highlight, however the usual array of good quality paintings on show.

A really ornate facade and very impressive inside the church. There's a nice old chap trying to sell souvenirs, a guide book and religious bits and pieces inside the church and he was eager to tell anyone who cared to listen bits of its history. He didn't pause to consider whether you understood him - which I only partially did... More

One of the many interesting churches in Lecce. There are really a lot of nice churches. This church is centrally located and attract less tourist than the cathedral. Outside is very nice.

For those of us whom the local guidebook regard as Lutheran heretics, this church is a splendid statement from the counter-reform. Huge and airy, baroque but restrained, it celebrates a lady who was dethroned as Lecce's saint, apparently because she was a Byzantine saint and good old Oronzo was thought more suitable. There is no St Oronzo's church in Lecce,... More

Wonderful baroque. Asked one of the most 'beautiful Lecce. Magnificent facade, interior clear and simple. The Baroque in Lecce stone extracted from a new dimension.

This church devoted to the patron of the city, has an amazing interior distribution and detail. A clear example of the Baroque period of Lecce.

What an amazing style of ornamentation. Exuberant doesn't really describe it. Lots of students sitting on the steps added to the charm.
