Although Saint Irene was the patron saint of Lecce, the male powers in control decided a male saint should replace a female saint. Thus, Saint Oronzo was chosen to replace Saint Irene who had a Roman town connection.

A couple of lovely, carved baroque side chapels make it worth looking inside. The outside doesn't shout 'come in' especially as there are so many baroque churches around in Lecce.

This is another imprssive baroque style church a few blocks away from the Duomo and worth a look.It was built at the beginning of the 18th century and apparently dedicated to the ancient patrons of the town.

A really ornate facade and very impressive inside the church. There's a nice old chap trying to sell souvenirs, a guide book and religious bits and pieces inside the church and he was eager to tell anyone who cared to listen bits of its history....More

One of the many interesting churches in Lecce. There are really a lot of nice churches. This church is centrally located and attract less tourist than the cathedral. Outside is very nice.
