This Gothic church, built to celebrate the so-called Miracle of Bolsena (1263 AD,) contains the sacred corporale (altar cloth) that is locked in a huge, jewel-encrusted casket and a number of magnificent frescoes by the 14th-century painter Ugolino di Prete, which describes the miracle.

The chapel is named after the altar`s cloth (Corporal), in which blood was shed during the miracle in Bolsena. It was difficult for modern man to understand the enthusiasm which was the motivation for the construction of this impressive Cathedral. The chapel of Corporale is...More

The Cappella del Corporate is a very special place. It is one of the reasons pilgrims visit Orvieto. Our group was able to have Mass in the chapel. Unfortunately the large reliquary which holds the corporal is no longer open for view. We were told...More

As per a number of my other reviews, We have been traveling for 6 weeks in Italy, and I really didn't think I would be knocked off my socks by another Italian town. Orvieto and the Capella del Corporate is a cant miss attraction!

The chapel of the Corporal was in use by an English speaking preacher so we had to come back later. The chapel has interesting 14th century frescoes.

Il Duomo is a gem in itself. And inside you will find another gem, this chapel enriched by fresco paintings, statues and the beautiful painting Madonna dei Raccomandati by Lippo Memmi.

At this time, the "miracle cloth" is not displayed, and the chapel is restricted for those who wish to pray...you may look at the lovely frescoes inside, but you can't view them close up.

According to the genial Italian at the desk, the chapel houses a very special cloth. If my understanding of the gentleman was correct (my Italian being rather pants), a miracle occurred where the bread of communion, which was wrapped in the now-sacred cloth, became the...More
