Going down and going back up is not exactly easy, especially the way back up, with all the humidity present, made us quite out of breath! But it was really worth it, a unique place of its kind, moreover you can take the time you want, the entrances are structured so as not to crowd the place too much and to go calmly and enjoy the descent and ascent at your own pace .
It is fascinating to look out and see the structure of the well, as well as impressive, once at the bottom, to look up and realize how far you have gone!
Once at the bottom it is customary to throw a coin making a wish from the small bridge that connects the part where you go down to the part where you go up.

Splendid architectural work that dates back to the first half of 1500 made by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger at the behest of Pope Clement VII. It was designed to ensure water supply during sieges. The well, dug in the tuff, has a width of 13 meters and is 62 meters deep, it is equipped with two helical stairs, one for descending, the other for ascending that were used at the time also by mules. Considering the level of humidity present it is necessary to be careful while walking the stairs which can be slippery. The cost of the ticket is 5 euros, free for disabled carers and children up to 6 years, reduced for students and over 65.

suggestive place, there are different sensations that you feel, you appreciate the extraordinary architecture, the human ingenuity, in some ways you also breathe a mystical atmosphere. Both the ascent and descent are quite easy, although you have to pay attention to the humidity that accumulates in the steps, ticket 5 euro.... bought a few meters before. The only sore note, which cmq often affects in my opinion in any visit you make, the rudeness, and I dare say even the little education of the staff, I think it is obvious to ask purely informative questions, receive answers not exhaustive, with rudeness and I would say even a little 'rudeness is not pleasant email. (I refer to the employee present at the entrance to the well).

It is true that it is not a figurative work of art, but the ingenuity that pervades this structure and is the fruit of the highest human ingenuity are things that strike and that leave crammed. The double helical scale is an absolute masterpiece and I think one of the first examples of the genre that inspired such structures. Tiring perhaps, but imagining the tremendous work done for the construction, the solutions adopted for its use makes me travel through time and history.

This double helix resembling DNA is a marvelous creation of human beings. We went two days in a row. Thinking about building a structure like this many centuries ago is a good mind exercise.

The visit to St. Patrick's well had been planned for some time.
It is a very suggestive place, with remarkable architecture as the stairs that go up and those that go down never meet having been designed to let donkeys go up and down to collect water in the past. It is very characteristic, there are many steps but it is worth it.

If you're into engineering/architectural wonders you will likely enjoy this. If you like walking down and then up uneven, downward tilting spiral stairs you will enjoy this. I have no idea where the reviewer who says there was a handrail was, as we did not find any handrails on our walk and occasionally one of the lights on the staircase were out . As a middle aged woman with her senior aged friend I was just worried one of us would sprain an ankle. Still, we got some serious exercise in and the way the stairs go in a helix is pretty great. We were drenched in sweat by the end of this experience, asking ourselves what the point was.

Very characteristic. Coming to Orvieto is a fundamental stop.
If you come with backpacks THERE IS NO WAY TO STORE THEM. Even though there are lockers with keys in the ticket office, "the service is not active". There is a bar and a bathroom just outside which can be used for the modest sum of 0.50 cents.

Beautiful, suggestive, but to keep in mind that it is challenging, not so much in the descent as in the ascent.
Wet and slippery steps. Be careful.
How careful not to lean out of the windows you will find along the stairs, especially if you have children.

The Well of St. Patrick in Orvieto is an extraordinary work of the sixteenth century, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. 53 meters deep, the well was built to ensure the water supply during the sieges. The structure is characterized by two independent helical stairs, one to descend and one to climb, which allow the continuous passage of people and animals without meeting. The 72 interior windows illuminate the path, creating a fascinating play of light and shadow. A masterpiece of engineering and architecture.
