My husband and I stopped by for a quick sampling of their wine. The charming, renovated farm house was so cozy and designed very tastefully. I particularly liked the small batch, boutique, craft organically produced wines. Ruta was very informative and educated us about the wines in the Orvieto region as well as their style of grapes. Their unique style wine differs from the traditional Umbrian wine. However, be warned ... if stop by for a tasting, you will be charged 5 euros per person per sample. For example, if you select 3 wines to taste, you will be poured the equivalent of a few sips for 5 euros per glass. This could easily add up if you add more wines to try. It ended up costing us 30 euros for the sample of 3 wines for 2 people. This was not explained to us when we first started tasting.

What a great visit to this wonderful spot on earth.
Leon, our host, was so welcoming and so willing to share his vineyards .
We learned from a passionate wine maker .
We were part of a group of 10 from Savannah Ga (USA) and Leon made us feel like we were right at home.
We also learned that, romantic as it may seem, wine making requires knowledge, skill, good luck and hard work.
The vineyards were beautiful and the wine cellar was a special part of the visit.
Then for the relaxing part of the visit. We spent nearly an hour around Leon's kitchen table enjoying several choices of fine wines ,cheeses, bread and olives grown right on premises. Just to show how good the tasting was, many in our group had wine shipped home.
I can not encourage others more to visit with Leon at Madonna del latte(MDL) You will not be disappointed and you will be refreshed. Upon a return visit to Orvieto, MDL will be a sure place for a revisit. It was memorable.

We visited 6 wineries -- in Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Orvieto -- during our trip to Italy this summer. I liked them all, but my clear favorite was Madonna del Latte. Leon and Manuela were wonderful hosts during a tour and tasting on their property. Leon described his careful (in every sense of the word) approach to winemaking, and showed us the treasure of an Etruscan cave (now wine cellar) unearthed after they purchased the property. We then sat down under in a picturesque arbor setting outdoors and enjoyed an excellent tasting. On a sunny day with a light breeze in the tiny town of Sugano... it was a perfect experience.

Madonna del Latte is a one hour direct train trip from Rome to Orvieto. Leon, the owner of this boutique winery, explained his wine production and showed us his lovely vineyards, barrels and wine cellar. His fine wine tastings and gourmet cheese/meats were exceptional. Since it was winter, he invited us into his beautiful dining area with fireplace to experience the tastings. Leon was a very gracious host and answered all of our questions. We wish we had bought more of his wine since we drank most of it during the rest of our vacation. Highly recommended! You will have time to explore Orvieto after the wine tasting. Thanks Leon!!!

It was a little hard to find! There are 2 ways to get there an easy way and a harder way thru typically town of very tight streets especially for a van.

When we finally arrived it was a piece of heaven. Leon greeted all 12 of us with a warm smile. His home and property is just beautiful.

We didn't want to take time away from Leon because it was the beginning of harvesting season. Leon wanted us to see everything. He was an excellent host. So passionate about his wines and he should be!!! The wines were superb!!! The sparkling rose was one of our favorites along with the cabernet. We took about 10-12 bottles back to the villa with us. I can say i think they lasted 3 days.

Leon explained how the vineyards were started by his father and his fathers love for wine. If your worried about not understanding Leon, his english is very good.

You must make an appointment!! We corresponded via email and it worked perfectly. The tasting is $20 and well qorth it!!!

Hopefully one day his wines will be imported to America!!

Leon was the perfect host to such a wonderful extraordinary educational wine tasting experience. He is passionate about his wines and I experienced why his wines have won him such distinguished awards. Leon took me all around his wonderful estate. I learned how the wines flourish and grow in the volcanic soil and aged in a discovered Etruscan tomb. Then he invited me in his home to taste the amazing wines and learn the history and depth of flavors. The Sucano flagship wine- my favorite. But I gotta tell you, over the top was the olive oil!!! The very very best I have ever tasted and I've traveled all around! He only makes these in small batches but I felt honored to take back 2 bottles. Last night I made homemade sprouted wheat bread warm out of the oven - opened a bottle and all I can say- Heavenly!! I will order more!! I received my shipment of Sucano and incredible white- Viognier! Sooo awesome! Thank you Leon for your wonderful hospitality and sharing of knowledge expertise and amazing wines and the very very best olive oil!
Truly award winning!!

Madonna del Latte was a welcome break from the traditional Tuscan wine tasting experience. Leon, the winemaker provides guests with an exceptional vineyard tour and tasting. Some of the varietals of wine include; sparkling Rose, Viognier, Pinot Nero, and Cab Franc blends. The tasting also includes a sampling of goat cheese from a neighboring farm. The property is beautiful and the tour was very informative. The overall experience is a must do!

Leon has a passion for producing a quality product. This is evident in the tour of the fields, the remodel of the home, and the taste of the wine. The goat cheeses he served with the wines were the best I have tasted, fresh and creamy. Everyone in our group of 6 enjoyed listening to the story of each wine and the pace of the tasting. If you are near the area...you should contact the winery for a tour.

Thanks to our guide Stephen and his friendship with the owner, we had a wonderful day visiting Madonna del Latte vineyards in Orvieto where we could not have asked for more attention from Leon, the vintner and owner. Leon kindly toured us through his gorgeous property, explained the growing and wine making processes and provided us with the most amazing outdoor setting to taste each of the varietals Leon produces including the grappa! While we drank and learned of the wines, we were also treated to beautiful local cheeses, tomatoes and ham. Although Leon takes care of almost all of the operation by himself, he was very generous with his time. The wines were so delicious and reasonably priced, we have a case being shipped to our home! BTW, we also purchased all of the dried pasta Leon had to offer which we understand had also been made by another local artisan. Madonna del Latte is not to be missed when in or close to Orvieto!!
