Passing by Pistoia during a trip to Tuscany, I went back to see the silver altar of San Jacopo kept in a cathedral chapel that I had already seen some time ago. The altar is an incredible work of Gothic goldsmithery and when I saw it I discovered many details. Very nice also the rest of the cathedral which is a beautiful Romanesque.

The cathedral of San Zeno, although little known, is one of the most beautiful churches in Tuscany. The most interesting point of the visit is the altar of San Jacopo, entirely in embossed silver foil, located in the chapel of the Crucifix. The silver decoration is on all sides. Other precious gems can be discovered in the side chapels by walking inside the church.

The Cathedral of San Zeno is the main church of Pistoia and located in the historic center in Piazza del Duomo. The architectural style is between Romanesque and Baroque, with three naves, a crypt and a raised presbytery. To visit.

The Cathedral of San Zeno is the current Cathedral of Pistoia.
It is a Romanesque building dating back to around the 10th century.
Outside, next to the facade is a beautiful bell tower.
The interior has three naves.
Beautiful are the frescoes and the large wooden crucifix.
Interesting is the crypt.

From the della Robbia ceramic over the entrance, to the main altar, to the spectacular side altar -- all in silver -- depicting the life of St. James, this is a church not to be missed.

The Duomo trio (the church, the baptistery and the bell tower) are definitely worth visiting; you have to make sure you see Pisano's pulpit at San'Andrea and the terracottas of della Robbia at the Ospedale. Pistoia is a wonderful place to visit, so much calmer than Florence with great art from both the medieval and the Renaissance periods. San Zeno, the duomo, is another example… beautiful medieval church that begins with a great portal. The Altarpiece is one of the masterpieces of Andrea Mantegna. A real classic.

The Duomo of San Zeno in Pistoia is a wonderful example of archetecture at the time - Pisan style. The rich banded exterior hides a plain interior . The entry archway is richly decorated in blue and white glazed terracotta. The beautiful red, black and cream painted roof beams give a hint of what the interior must have looked like. There are fragments of frescoes and these must have covered the walls completely. The small crypts on either side of the raised altar show excavations of earlier churches and the graves/memorials to the town's cardinals. One chapel is dedicated to Padre Pio. In a side chapel, at some time, someone decided to build another wall - right across a beautiful frescoe depicting various biblical characters. This must have been a vast frescoe and only a small section now survives. There various beautifully carved monuments to various patrons and eccleastical figures.
The forecourt between the Duomo and the Baptistry is the site of a market every Wednesday and Saturday mornings and although this is interesting, it prevents any photography of the facade of the Duomo. The market spreads through the side streets as well.
The Campanile can be climbed at specific times and you should book to do this through the tourist office that is located diagonally across from the baptistry (Palazzo dei Vescovi - Piazza del Duomo). There are toilets at No 13 Via Braccolini near the duomo (E0.50).

Pistoia is not a very well-known city, you mightn’t have heard about it so many times, but it offers some beauties too, such as the beautiful Cathedral of St. Zeno in the main square of the town. It’s in Romanic style, recognizable from the black stripes.

The interior of this church might appear bare, actually inside there is a very special reliquary that definitely deserves to be seen.

Ti aspettiamo.
