One buys the tickets in the battisterio, because only guided tours are possible. Once the ascend starts, it is clear why: the stairs are steep, irregular and worn out. At places, the balustrade is low. I recommend the visit only to those who are comfortable with heights and have a certain basic fitness. Wear proper shoes, no sandals or flip-flops.
Having said that, the visit is great fun. Our guide spoke and explained in both, Italian and English. The tower is in good shape, with much original work in place. From the top one has stunning views over Pistoia and over the plane until Florence. Best of all, it is not crowded at all. We were in a group of eight and had a lot of time to enjoy the view. Highly recommended.

Today we visited this place. It's really wonderfull!
Everywhere you look in the center you can see the nice buildings and churches.
It's really a pleasure to walk around.
For dis-abled persons are everywhere the ramps to enter.
This church is a very simple one, but nice to visit.

I love Tuscany and make sure that I climb up at least one tower in each city I visit for a view from the top. This one does not disappoint. For me the fact that visit to the tower was accompanied by a guide speaking only Italian has its drawback. It's not about missing out on the information about the tower which is readily available in the leaflet handed out with the ticket. For me the drawback was being hurried to keep up so I could not take in or take photos of the views at my own pace. The views from the top were lovely but not dissimilar to other bird's eye views from other cities in the area. But it was worth the climb up the narrow stairs for me. Pistoia (especially the Old Town) is as charming as other more popular destinations in like Lucca or Siena. Howevert the lack of tour groups made it very pleasant to be able to appreciate this Italian capital of culture 2017 at leisure

The bell tower / campanile of the Duomo is quite large and impressive. Seems to reflect several different construction styles with the highest levels being the most interesting to me. You're able to climb the tower to the top for a view, should this interest you. Enjoy. ...

As in every Duomo complex, the bell tower is part of the baptistery, duomo (church), campanile trio. It is the least interesting of the three buildings. You can walk up and see the view. But your time is better spent exploring Pistoia on foot.

Have been vsiting the towns around Tuscana, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca & Firenze all very good except the numbers of turists. Pistola is a walled town with the churches, bell tower, musuems & restaurants all you want but very few turists. Strongly recommended.

Nice and not-too-tall climb up the stairs.
Lovely 360 vista. All of Pistoia is quite visible.
Recommended for kids.
Great view of the surrounding hills.
