Unless you are a keen walker, you need a car but visiting all the forts around Porto Ercole is a must, the views are superb and give you a great feel for the area.

Forte Stella is one of Argentario's little treasures that most visitors don't ever see... With the beautful sea surrounding the entire promontory, it's easy to understand!

However, Forte Stella is a very worthwhile detour (especially if one has had enough of beaches and boats). It is a great walk (it takes about 30 minutes from the centre of Porto Ercole, although one can park one's car at the base of the fort; this will reduce the walk to less than ten minutes!)

It is an olld fortification built by the Spaniards in the XVII century.

Forte Stella sits above Porto Ercole on the southeast corner of Monte Argentario. It has nice views but not a lot else. If you're nearby it makes sense to visit if you have time but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. You can get similar views from the road that goes around the south side of Monte Argentario (see photos).
