The name refers to the large chain which in the past centuries was stretched across the water in defence of the harbour. Until 1929, the piazza was home to the Imperial Customs House: a sign of the borderline which for centuries separated the northern stretch of the lake from the regions just a little further to the south. On this square the baroque statue of San Giovanni Nepomuceno, patron saint of the waters, can be found, which until the Great War stood in Piazza Benacense.

Explore the waterfront, sample the ice creams or visit a bar. Boar trips around the lake which we have been on on a previous visit some years ago. A walk around the old town is rewarding.

Great place to sip coffee and people watch all through the day. Pleasantly surprised by prices, we were expecting higher at the cafes on the square (where you can often find free wifi too). We were there when a classic car rally came through.

A few shops, bars, restaurants, Hotel Europa and Gelateria Christallo. Plenty of places to sit or browse. The boats operate from this part of the harbour. Historically, this is where the chains (Carena) were hauled in to protect the ancient harbour. Very interesting but no...More

We ended up in this square many times during our holiday - sometimes just to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by and also of course the ferries. The ferries all stop here so it is often a very busy area and...More

Enjoyed drinks and the view of the lake from a plaza restaurant. Views of the lake and seeing people enjoying the day provided a good setting for our visit.

A lovely piazza in this beautiful lake side town, which you will stumble across when wandering round the town and cannot miss when arriving by boat.
