The Torre Leon Pancaldo also known as Torre della Quarda is the symbol of the city and is commonly called "The Tower".
It was built in a strategic position has a square plan of about six meters on the side and is twenty-three meters high.
It is dedicated to Leon Pancaldo, a navigator from Savona who accompanied Ferdinand Magellan, during his first circumnavigation around the world.
The niche of the east façade houses the statue of Our Lady of Mercy, the work of sculptor Filippo Parodi disciple of Bernini.
On the facade overlooking the sea stand the verses of the poet Gabriella Chiabrera from Savona:
“In angry sea, in immediate procella, I invoke you, our benign Stella”
prayer of invocation addressed by the sailor to Our Lady.
The night vision is spectacular 👍

The Torre Leon Pancaldo or Torre della Quarda, commonly called "Torretta", is a medieval tower located on the port of Savona, at the entrance to the central Via Paleocapa, and is considered the symbol of the city.
After the destruction of the walls by the Genoese in 1527 the tower remained isolated and in the following centuries underwent a series of alterations. In particular, the entrance side, which once had to be open and covered by a barrel vault, was walled up and the interior of the tower was divided into several floors.

The tower, like the square where it stands, is today dedicated to Leon Pancaldo, a savonese navigator who accompanied Ferdinando Magellano during his first circumnavigation around the world.

When you arrive by cruise ship in Savona the first landmark you see is the tower. Nothing too extraordinary but is worth a walk around as you walk in Savona. The cruise ship we were on docked right downtown which is the really nice thing about Savona. Everything is pretty much within walking distance.

This is a meeting place for the Savona people and tourists. They have several restaurants and bars in the piazza. A great location to meet people.

When you reach Savona Cruise Terminal the first thing that you see is a tower which is Torre Leon Pancaldo. From the Cruise Terminal it is very easy to go to the Tourist Information Office where you are greeted by friendly staff who explain in detail how to visit the most interesting places of Savona. If you have good feet and on a sunny day you wear a hat you can easily reach every place of interest. We did all this in roughly 4 hours. If it's a Sunday we will have an extra bonus of visiting a very large antique market.
Torre Leon Pancaldo is also known as Torre della Quarda or Torretta. It dates back to the 14th century and is the symbol of Savona. It houses a statuette of Our Lady of Mercy in a niche on its south facade.

For those who depart or arrive by ship to Savona this tower is one of the first thing they see. It marks as well where one of the main streets of old Savona meets the sea. The tower holds temporara exhibitions from time to time but it is equally admirable from the outside. Impossible to miss if you are starting or finishing a cruise in Savona

This is right off the cruise ship so you can just walk to it and don't need a car. It is fun to watch the cars sizzling by! There are lots of panhandlers in the area when we went.
