Lots of Beautiful Medieval Art
Jul. 2019
Built, starting in 1079, over an existing church. He artwork in here is outstanding. The front of the church was raised and redone in 1342, the artwork in these arches (from 16th century) is beautiful. After WWII this entire church was stripped down / re-worked to the appearance it had in the 15th century. There are still sections of frescoes from the 12th century. Many of the frescoes (now uncovered) are from the 14th and 15th century. There’s an inscription in the church dated 1079 stating the church was dedicated to a martyr that was murdered in a spectacle at a nearby Roman amphitheater. It's free, it's historic, it's art, what's not to love?

Absolutely beautiful old church right as you walk through the gates to the old section of town on your right. Free entry and worth sticking your head inside

Some nice frescoes

The church situated at the Garibaldi square in Spoleto is the Romanesque building built at the turn of the 12th century with a nice bell-tower. The church went through the major refurbishments in the 16th and 18th century. There are some interesting well-preserved frescoes to be seeing in its interior which makes it interesting for a short visit.

Somewhere hidden at the square is this very old Parrocchia. The inside looks relatively dull, but you have to imagne that this is very old and stillsome very very old paintings are to be seen on the pillars and walls.

Not as prominent or ostentatious as many other Italian churches, this is unique with an interesting layout and some fabulous frescoes. Very friendly congregation.

Spoleto's a great town and besides the old town and all it has to offer, in the newer part of town, we happened upon this beautiful church with it's wonderful frescoes.

We parked right outside, The square can be lively, and it's fun to watch the locals and kids meeting and hanging out. This church is a peaceful get away and step in the past before heading out to see the modern shops. It's a quick visit. I love these old churches, and I believe Spoleto has at least 17 of them.

The first & a most powerful site entering Garibaldi Piazza gate, somehow missed by many

The Church of Saint Gregory is fascinating on many counts. Its impact is immediate with a street level fresco outside and a powerful host of the same throughout the interior. And then there's the lower level, with a whole other feel to it: equally in culture, faith and time. I cannot help but feel almost everyone who doesn't pass this gem by finds it both moving and interesting.

It has been the first monument I have noticed in Spoleto. Outside, you cannot loose the frescos in the Chapel of the Innocents, before going into the church. Then, inside, you'll appreciate a mix of styles: in fact, on the romanic style, they have inserted also gotic and baroque elements.

A unique church in lower Spoleto

We attended a wedding ceremony in this church and were impressed with the artworks and beautiful wrought iron. The church has recently been restored and is worth visiting before doing any shopping in Corso Garibaldi.
The frescoes are particularly eye-catching.
