We live in Umbria and had only passed through Todi after a day spent in Orvieto. We promised ourselves that we would return to Todi and spend a day exploring its churches and other monuments. Today, we finally did it, and it was worth it. The historic center of Todi is not very big and, surprisingly, not terribly hilly or steep, so you can walk there quite easily. If you're in Umbria and have a chance, definitely spend a half-day or day in Todi!!!

Interesting town found at the top of another long winding road to the hilltop. New town surrounding the old town walls. We didn’t go to the Ferrari meeting that was being held in a couple of days but imagine this would have been a site to see

We visited Todi twice during our visit and really enjoyed this relaxed medieval town.
Parking is best at car park 2 and then take the funicular up to the town centre.
The town is charming and full of character. Both our visits were on a Sunday and there weren't the hoards of bus trips you can find in more popular cities in the area.
The tourist information an €8.50 ticket which includes a guided tour to the towns Roman cisterns, entry to two museums and access to the bell tour of a local church which gives wonderful views of the valley below.

This is very special. It is near perfection. The area is small, but no-one has ruined the coherence of the mediaeval squares and churches with insensitive additions or demolitions. There is a real sense of the continuity of human occupation since the fie-hundreds BC. You can see (trough tough glass set into the main square) the surface of the Romen forum. You can stand in teh Piazza Garibaldi and look over the Etruscan walls to the Tiber valley below, where in winter, you may see eagles hunting below the town. Todi is magical and as yet unspoiled by a heavy tourism footprint, keeping its integrity and its very good restaurants.

Todi grabbed us by the throat and wouldn't let go until we pulled ourselves away. As I read in New York about the place voted most livable town in Italy, the concept was almost too difficult to imagine. There are just too many marvelous possibilities in too many sectors of this compelling peninsula's vast splendor to even play with such a notion as most livable town.
Todi makes a great case. First developed by the Umbric tribe, then the Etruscans who, as the histories tell us, gave it the name Tutere meaning border, then of course the Romans converged upon it in 89 BC. We are left with a magnificent hilltop town, so magnificently preserved, with so many treasures.
Its Centro Storico/Piazza Populi has been called one of the best preserved of all Feudal/Medieval examples. That's a considerable number of accolades for one amazingly layered and fine Umbrian town.

A small hilltop town in the Umbrian hills. Life seems at a slower pace here. Make sure you take time to walk the little streets next to San Fortunato church heading towards the Rocca. They are gorgeous and quaint. Stone buildings, narrow two way streets and church bells that seem to be ringing every few minutes. Paid parking, not expensive, is at Parcheggio di Porta Orvietana, Viale di Montesanto. Then take the free "lift" which is like a funicular to the top of town. Worth a visit if you are in Umbria.

We visited on a very quiet Sunday, but the town was lovely and the people were so welcoming and friendly. The views of the surrounding countryside were equally beautiful.

The beautiful town of Todi was first builton a hilltop in the second century B.C. and now we can see the most important medieval buldings in the central square: Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Popolo and the Cathedral of la Santissima Annunziata.
They are all in perfect conditions and a few steps away I suggest you to see the second cathedral of San Fortunato, a gothic church even more beautiful than the first.
Around the square there are different shops, restaurants and most of all cafe' to relax and enjoy this marvelous place.

We spent our April in Tuscany visiting less travelled areas and were most please. Todi, Montone, Citta di Castella all were visually magnificent, no crowds, friendly to visitors. Highly recommended way to see the medieval hill towns of Umbria.

Walking around the ancient walled city of Todi is like walking into the pages of a history book. We had a half day here, and our tour driver had to let us out just barely inside the town, because it is difficult for large vehicles. Scooters and Smart Cars abound, though.. It's authentic medieval feel makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. The duomo is just gorgeous (I have never seen such beautiful and majestic churches as what we saw in Italy...). Worth the steps up and down and up and down. Cozy shops and quaint cafes and city square straight out of a fairy tale make this a do-not-miss stop in Umbria. Wish we had more of a "plan" to visit there, as we hop-scotched here-and-there without really knowing where we were going. However, we loved it and will return on our next trip to Italy.
