Volterra is one of the typical old Tuscany villages. The square is beautiful and brings you way back in time. What we liked the most is that there are much less tourists in Volterra.

Volterra was one of my favorites; the Piazza is surrounded by impressive medieval buildings & the town was busy during the day when the numerous shops and museums were open. By 7pm however, the Piazza and surrounding streets were as quiet as a church mouse...More

We visited a couple of times, one on the day of the Palio, a quite splendid occasion. There are some decent cafes too.

This cute little church is in the center of the plaza and definitely worth the see. A couple steps and you are at the top!

Town Hall chamber remarkable for its paintings and frescos. Second floor exhibition not so interesting. Climb up Bell tower challenging but avoid bells ringing on the hour and half hour because there isn't must room up there.

Standing in this space, I felt overwhelmed by the state of preservation of this ancient square. Never attacked or destroyed, it stands within the protective walls and enclosing Renaissance buildings intact, a gracious and inviting public area that has survived centuries.

I so enjoy walking through the piazzas of Italy and stopping to just take in the various buildings and people sightings. I enjoyed a gelato while walking through the Piazza dei Priori and just took my time absorbing the sights.

We did a quick tour of this small historical town after a visit it San Gimignano. It doesn’t have the beauty or charm of San Gimignano, or the crowds, but is a very worthwhile visit. The square is a good place to sit for a...More

Climb to the top of the hill to enjoy this piazza. Great spot to take in the historical buildings and people watch too. Look up and see if you can find the pig. Once you find it see if you can find the story behind...More
