While staying in Volterra I ‘found’ this wonderful gallery (L’Artista in Vicolo Ormanni, off Piazza Settembre). The gallery itself, in two parts, is fascinating and houses a huge printing press. If you hit lucky you may see Siobhan using it. Siobhan’s screen prints are just wonderful – amazing colours that she mixes herself. I bought one of her Celtic letters which now has pride of place in my study. I liked the print of Montecatini but couldn’t decide which colour-way I liked best. Am going back later in the year and am wondering if I should buy two in different colour ways and mount them together – they’d look stunning!! She has a really interesting and informative web site. Site and gallery are both well worth a visit.

What a lovely gallery - check out the hand-painted floor! Siobhan took pains to answer all our questions, and explain her silk-screening techniques, which you can sometimes see her doing. (Sadly we missed that opportunity. Next time, though!) I loved the Tuscan landscapes, and the city views through an arch, in different colourways, making each print unique. These made fabulous mementoes of our trip, and gifts to take home rolled in a tube, although Siobhan offered to send them home for us. The Celtic letters and figures have links with the medieval heraldry of Tuscany, which reminded us of the pageants and flag-waving contests we saw. Of course it helped that being Irish, she spoke English, although she has lived in Italy for a number of years.

This charming gallery on Piazza 20 Settembre is run by the artist herself. She specialises in silkscreen prints and does exccellent fresh coloured local landcapes. (65 - 120 Euros) The inking is complex and very attractive, making a lovely and easily portable souvenir. She also does Celtic calligraphic pieces with those wonderful gothic patterns as single letters or single words. (45 - 95 Euro) I was also taken with a range of small items with a celtic theme: notebooks and boxes of note cards all of handmade paper from 2,50 ti 12.50 Euros. All the work is handmade and unique and far more attractive than the mass produced landscapes typically available. She also frames beautifully and not expensively but frames were too difficult for us to transport,

The artist Siobhan, who runs L'Artista, is producing some of the best work of vineyards I have seen. As a wine exporter I found her prints represent the very essence of Tuscany wines, especially with her extraordinary use of colours. Every print is different, some with spring colours others with the colours of autumn. Sometime she achieves the colours of the wines that will come from the vines. Very impressed. Her other works are also well worth viewing, as a change from so much touristy stuff (no sun flowers!); and one of my friends, who is a biker, now has some of her Celtic work on his wall. This is a fantastic little gallery with unique prints being done by a very talented artist. Do not miss it if when you visit Volterra

I visited the L'Artista Gallery in Volterra and was lucky enough to see the artist herself Siobhan Doyle demonstrating her skills on the street outside. She was doing it by hand as this was in the middle of the Volterra medieval festival. Behind her the gallery was open and on the walls were some excellent prints which captured the Tuscany country side beautifully. Each print is unique as the colours are applied by hand and no two prints can ever be identical as the colours mix in different ways with each pull. Siobhan took the time to explain the steps she took to get from sketch to print and how many screens were used to print her stunning artwork. For truly original pieces of art which capture the essence of Tuscany and its many sights, I would definitely visit this gallery which is easy to find off the Piazza XX Settembre. I must also mention that Siobhan has a range of Celtic letters (most of the alphabet I believe) inspired by the book of kells printed in a myriad of colors. Happily I walked away with a few of her prints which I gave as presents and have one hanging on the wall beside me as I speak.

Thank-you for taking the time to give me such a positive review. I am very pleased that my first review should be by a fellow country woman. When you visited I had only recently started demonstrating my silk-screening techniques in public and I remember your interest in what I was doing was very encouraging. I hope you have the opportunity to visit Volterra again in the future.
