Gloria is the real deal, a true master of her craft. And while Volterra is partly known for its alabaster carvings dating back to the Etruscans, and craftspeople maintaining those traditions to this day, there's something different about Gloria. Not only is she a master, and not only does she have great respect for the traditions and for classic motifs, but she is also a contemporary talent. Her original creations stand on their own. Since visiting her store and workshop last month, I have been working closely with Gloria over email on a couple of special custom pieces for very special purposes. It's been a true delight. She's been very diligent about getting it just right, and sending photos of her ideas for my consideration. The first custom piece is nearing completion, at which time it'll be shipped stateside and we'll commence with the second piece. I am very excited to see and feel the final creations, and put them to special use. For anyone visiting Volterra, and to anyone looking for authentic Volterra alabaster pieces with a specific idea in mind (Etruscan or otherwise), I hope you are fortunate enough to visit the workshop and boutique, meet Gloria, and enjoy the elegant beauty of her masterful creations.

There are too many Alabaster shops in Volterra touting average and in some cases poor work. Go to Gloria's workshop and see her extraordinary talent in creating alabaster product. There is very little price difference in her work and the tat so go here first. She ships globally, so don't worry about getting it home. A lovely lady as well!

After a wonderful stop at the museum and viewing the Etruscan alabaster (incredible and must do) we wondered into Gloria Giannelli's shop where she was working on pieces. Her work is distinguished by "lace" carving of the stone and simple, elegant shapes - not at all "tourista." She provided great detail about working in alabaster. My son, who speaks Italian, really enjoyed conversing with her and undoubtedly helped a bit in terms of "pricing." (Her prices were fair but as we got several things, she did give us some discount.) Both a learning experience and a chance to get a beautiful keepsake. The pieces we bought were shipped to the US (very well packed and the shipping charge was quite reasonable). Given the weight, well worth it.
