Unique architectural adventure
Sep. 2019 • Friends
There’s nothing quite like the Arcachonnaise style and it’s really interesting to take a walk round the curious and fantastical villas of the Ville d’Hiver. Particularly suited to a less sunny day if the weather has turned bad!

Interesting if you are curious about house architecture
Jun. 2019
It's a personal thing. If you are interested in seeing houses from another era in various styles, you shall probably find this interesting - to wander around and reflect on how they were when originally created. For me it's a definite 'like' but I suspect it wouldn't suit everybody.

Lovely villas and streets. Beautiful park. Lovely lanes and a tall viewing tower but not for the faint-hearted

Worth the effort

Some lovely grand houses perched up the hill from the sea front, around the lovely park and close to the observatory which at this time of he year was almost deserted ( but in summer queues stretch back) and gives brilliant views across the town and the bay

This is a must-see when visiting the town of Arcachon. Beautiful old houses - all very well kept in a quiet, tranquil part of the town

Classic Houses
Apr. 2019 • Couples
As you can see from the photos these are an amazing group of houses. We got the little map from the Tourist Office which outlines the 4.7 km suggested walk. This would have to be the most difficult to follow map I have ever used. We had to keep asking locals for directions, thankfully they were all helpful.

Spectacular Mansions
Mar. 2019 • Solo
Ville d'Hiver is a residential district of Arcachon filled with huge, stunning mansions. These are amazing structures constructed for a wealthy group of inhabitants who have left a set of houses quite unlike other residential districts.

Archaron is a town brimming with architectural beauty. It is a well-designed and attractive resort town. However, Ville d'Hiver is something else entirely. In most of the world, one of these mansions would be the standout building in an area but here there is a network of streets filled with them.

What makes this group of fine buildings special is that they are all different. The original inhabitants were clearly competing in the style and grandeur stakes. Some give the impression of being grand homes while others up the pretension and aim for small castle.

In recognition of the impressive neighbourhood's characters, there are occasional small plaques put up to explain not just the place but the people of their time. A particular highlight is to read of the eccentric MacGregor for whom Craigcrostan was built. A fabulous piece of local social history.

The current residents of the village continue to keep the place in good order. There are many wonderful gardens blooming with life and in some cases there are huge and spectacular trees.

Nowadays it isn't always popular to admir the creations of wealthy people but Ville d'Hiver in Arcachon is simply spectacular. In a beautiful resort town, this district is something to behold and well worth its reputation.

Stunning houses
Mar. 2019 • Couples
This area of the city is stunning. Already the city has some interesting architecture, but the villas here are totally amazing.

Incredible mansions for the wealthy families and their servants during the mid-1800's. Walking the beautifully lined streets to see these houses, you can not just stop, you go to see the next one, and the next one.
