This was never potable water - particularly when a stable was kept on top of it! The people of Sarlat should have studied Roman water management. But the people of Sarlat thought water was for animals, and wine was for people. Not a bad idea

The Fountain goes back to the 12th century. It is fitted between two huge walls. It is not potable water. It is a place just feet away from the craziness of the crowd.

A lovely cool dark area which houses a well dating back to the 12th century. Architecturally impressive it was walled up for many years because the water is now unfit for human consumption. Seemingly never crowded it offers a cool gentle escape from the heat...More

I am not religious but I found the fountain is very peaceful if you are there alone and can understand why people like it.

A lovely place, while we were there, a lot of people were in deep meditation, while sitting on the steps. Well worth a visit.
